If it’s not one pain, it’s another…

by MCM Mama on May 25, 2012

Yesterday I went out for a run again.  My foot hadn’t hurt in a few days and the swelling on Tuesday and Wednesday was minimal.  I decided to take my chiro’s advice and try a more supportive shoe than what I’ve been wearing.  I wore a pair of Saucony Triumphs.  Now, I loved these shoes.  They took me (injury free) through my second marathon and many shorter races.  They helped me when I was recovering from my achilles issues.

Yesterday they made my hip and knee hurt.  It was the hip and knee on the opposite side from my current calf and foot issues. Really?  Really???  I just felt like my foot was being forced to land wrong.  I managed 3 sucky miles (although a big piece of the sucky came from forgetting to eat breakfast + 75 degree weather).

On the bright side, my foot was not swollen last night and my knee and hip didn’t hurt at all after the run.

I’m just so frustrated.  I can’t seem to run minimalist without hurting myself, but my feet and gait have apparently changed in a way that my old shoes no longer fit.  I don’t have unlimited resources to keep buying different shoes either.  So, running is just going to have to take a back seat.

I’m doing the Another Mother Runner challenge for June and my calendar is going to be filled with yoga and gym time and biking.  I will manage to work out 5 times a week, even if running is only one or two of those times.

And I love how I start the challenge with a rest day.  That’s how I roll, people.  That’s how I roll.

Not good, but like you I found that I can’t run in the old heavier/high heeled shoes anymore, they just don’t feel right, I guess that is what happens which you go minimal.

I have found that my minimalist limit for now is a 4-6MM drop shoe lower stack height, with some cushioning. No I don’t get the road feel, but I also seem to stay uninjured with just little things happening because I screw up.

Good luck on finding out what is going on and I hope you get back out there sooner than later

Hoping everything regulates itself soon! A couple of weeks ago I had to take a week off because I felt a similar pain in the back of my knee, which was the same pain I had felt months before (on the opposite side) that had left me ‘runningless’ for about 4 months! Thankfully, this didn’t happen again!

Again, I hope things get back to normal soon!

How frustrating!! I’m so sorry. I too hope that things resolve themselves soon! I like the idea of the Another Mother Runner challenge. Hmmm, may have to consider that. And I like your approach starting with a rest day. Smart lady.

Very frustrating indeed! I would stay away from the big shoes. Maybe try out some different 4 mm drops (the Pure Flows are much more cushy) as an alternative for a while? It stinks.

I hope the challenge keeps you fulfilled in the meantime!

Looks like a great challenge for the month! Great way to stay active even if you can’t run as much as you’d like. (boohoo). I hope your body starts to cooperate!

Ug. Sorry you are having issues! That sucks. But you know, sometimes when I am not running, I have so much fun doing other cross training activities! Maybe you will find your secondary favorite thing to do!? I love how you start your training with a rest day. I am totally down with that.

How frustrating! I’m sorry to hear that it wasn’t a good run. This challenge for June looks like a good one though.

Can you return the Saucony’s? Our running stores here will take shoes back if they have less than x number of miles on them (and they didn’t work for whatever reason). I sure hope you can figure it out! I love the Brooks PureFlows – they are the perfect combo of low heel to toe drop, light weight, but cushioning.

Good luck with the challenge!
