Enjoying a break

by MCM Mama on July 3, 2012

The camp cancellation and power outages threw a bit of a kink into my plans for this week.  OK, they basically threw out my plans for this week.  Because I was supposed to go to camp and Beer Geek needed to work, Shoo was slated to fly to Wisconsin with his grandma.  When camp got postponed, we weren’t sure what to do.  I didn’t want to cancel Shoo’s flight and then get the opportunity to go to camp for a few days, but I also didn’t think Shoo would go to “Camp Grandma” with us here.  But with the cancellation of camp (and the subsequent promise of refunded money), a whole new world opened.

Last night, Jones and Shoo flew to Wisconsin with my mom and won’t be back until Friday.

This is huge.  In 10.5 years, I have only had a handful of nights without at least one child.  Now I have 4 whole nights without kids.

Don’t get me wrong.  I love my children and I do miss them, but I’ve dreamt about this day.  Most people look forward to the occasional trip with their spouse and not their children.   (And I did enjoy our trip to St. Martin).  Me?  I’ve been dreaming of a day when I could get some projects done on the house and just chill out in the evenings with a book.

Yesterday evening, I went running at 7pm.  That’s normally prime kid centric time with baths and snacks and Cello and…  To be able to just walk out the door and run was amazing.  (And only in the south would one think 90 degrees and 33% humidity is perfect running weather.  4 sweaty miles = done.)

So, I’ll spend the next few days cleaning and working and working out on whatever schedule makes me happy, while my kids swim in my parents’ pool, eat veggies straight from the garden, and celebrate a small town 4th of July.

Win/win for everyone.

Yay, that’s great for you! We take a night once in a while without kids. We all need it. We book into a hotel and leave the kids with a gradma or two sometimes. Heaven!

Even though it was many years ago I can still remember the taste of those first days without kids and time of my own.

Great change in plans. Of course you love your kids but everyone needs a little time off occasionally. They’re going to have fun. You’re going to have fun. It’s win-win!
