Half Marathon #1 Done!

by MCM Mama on January 18, 2013

Yesterday I ran my first 13.1 mile run of 2013 as part of my “Resolution Run” Virtual half marathon.  (For now, this counts as one of my 13 halves for the year.  I hope to do 13 real half marathon races.)

I didn’t plan to run a half, but the weather was the best it had been in days and I just kept going. And going. And going.  It wasn’t pretty (I’m still having issues with my toes) and it wasn’t fast (but I wasn’t planning to be fast), but it’s done!

Things I learned from this “race”:

  1. “Feels like 38″ and dry is a huge improvement over 35 and raining.
  2. Apparently my mind is strong enough to get me to run 7 miles more than my body really wanted to.
  3. Underwear with a seam across where your thighs and butt meet = recipe for major chafe.
  4. Finding out as you step into the shower is not a fun experience.
  5. Desitin rocks for chafe!
  6. I don’t need to fuel during a 13.1 mile run.  Nuun is enough.
  7. Chocolate milk after the run = the bomb.
  8. A Subway sub with EVERY.SINGLE.VEGGIE they have is pretty awesome too.
  9. If you think you might need gloves (and you have pockets they can be put in), wear the damn gloves!
  10. When you don’t have gloves, the thumbhole things on a jacket are a life saver. (Ok, maybe just a hand saver.)
  11. My Garmin will last 13.1 miles as long as it has at least one full bar of battery.
  12. I heart my Athleta Relay capris.  (Review coming soon)
  13. Doing four more of these on consecutive days is going to be… umm… interesting.

This is going to be a fun year!

One down! Congrats! Kind of fun that it was impromptu.

I did two consecutive rainy, cold days of running. I was pretty done with it and happy to have a respite yesterday. Now today it looks like wind will be the element I’ll hate!

I recently dropped the Gu for half marathons too. I find that as long as I eat something before the run, fueling during is unnecessary for 13 miles. I am beginning to think we might have been sold a bill of goods by the sports nutrition industry. And I was thinking of getting some Athleta capris. I will look for your review! And the sun is out this morning, finally!

Congrats!! 1 down and just 12 to go :-)
I LOVE my Athleta relay capris too. I was just thinking about them yesterday and comparing them to the others that I have. They really have been the best. Have a great weekend!

Great work – all except for the chafing. That one hurts!

Great job! Yes, four in a row should definitely be interesting. I’ve found out about chafing once as I stepped in the shower as well, ouch!

Nice! Scratch it off! The list, that is, not the chafing…
And diaper cream has saved my biking!!

Great job! I ran a virtual half this weekend. I found where I chaffed in the shower also- where my sports bra ends! Ouch!

Great run! You’re going to rock the 4 in a row. I’m obsessed with thumb holes :)

Nicely done! I always wear gloves of I have the slightest inkling my hands might get too cold. I really hate cold hands and feet!
