Saturday morning the boys and I loaded up the family truckster, I mean, Honda Pilot and hit the road. It’s spring break and Beer Geek has to work, so the boys and I decided to take a road trip and see the the sights America has to offer.
The first day we hit the Good Zoo in Wheeling, WV. The Good Zoo is a small part of the Oglebay Resort which includes a couple of museums, the zoo, a golf course, and gorgeous views. It’s surrounded by mansions on huge estates, but for some reason, my GPS took us the back way on barely more two lane roads through the holler. Apparently that was faster???
The boys loved the zoo and the museums and it was a nice break in the driving. It was also prom night, so we were surrounded by tons of kids in formal dresses and tuxes. I guess it’s a “thing” in that area to give the girls huge bouquets and go there for pictures. (Seriously, I thought it was a wedding when I saw the first girl with a bouquet the size of the one I carried at our wedding!)
After that, we headed a couple hours down the road towards our next destination before crashing for the night. I took advantage of teen sleeping habits and jumped on the hotel treadmill for a bit.
Sunday morning found us at the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson.
I grew up as an Air Force brat and Shoo is obsessed with planes, so it was the perfect choice. We go out to Udvar Hazy regularly but this was HUGE.
We managed to look at every single plane (include the B-52, which was what my dad flew in), did a flight simulator, and the Virtual Reality experience. If you are ever nearby, it’s definitely worth a visit.
Then it was time for a bit more driving before we crashed for another night. I managed to correct my lack of packing beer by picking up a small growler from a local brewery.
I admit I feel a bit like Clark in National Lampoon’s Vacation: This is no longer a vacation. It’s a quest. It’s a quest for fun. You’re gonna have fun, and I’m gonna have fun…
But Monday we’ll be meeting up with my parents for a few days with them. The question of the hour, however, is whether I’ll be running laps around the parking lot in the morning or skipping my run.
I’m linking up with HoHo and Tricia for the Weekly Recap. Stop by and check out their blogs and then check out a few in the linkup!
