10 miles of hell and the next marathon

June 12, 2009 by MCM Mama 14 Comments

OK, maybe it was just purgatory.  Last night I hit the treadmill at 8:30pm for a 10 mile run.  I watched “27 Dresses” while I ran.  I purposely ran it slow so I could actually watch the movie, so I ended up averaging a 10:30 pace.  After I got done, I could not settle down.  It was midnight before I could even try to sleep and sometime after 1 when I finally dozed off, only to be woken by Shoo.  I think running after the kids go to bed will only be a last resort in the future.  Since I was already tired from staying up too late while Beer Geek’s out of town, I’m barely coherent today.  The last time I was this tired, a newborn was involved.

I had dinner this week with the woman who got me hooked on racing.  She’s the mom of one of Jones’ closest friends.  She runs 2-3 marathons every year, including Boston every year.  A few years ago she talked me into racing my first race and even drove me to and from the event.  Anyways, we discussed her running schedule and how she manages to train on only four days of running a week.  She helped me figure out how to work in what I need to do to train for another marathon while Shoo is in preschool.
Which leaves me to figure out what marathon to do next spring.  I’d love to do one that coincides with spring break so we can make it a family vacation.  One that I’d really like to do is the Yakima River Canyon Marathon.  Unfortunately, it’s on the Saturday at the beginning of the break and it would be difficult to get there from the east coast without having the kids miss a couple of days of school.
Another one that interests me is the Rock N Roll Mardi Gras Marathon.  Unfortunately, it’s after the actual Mardi Gras.  While I don’t need to be in New Orleans on Mardi Gras (been there, done that, got the beads that prove, um, that I can jump really high, um, yeah), Beer Geek’s mom and three sisters all live near there, so I’d love to do some of the parades and celebrations that take place just outside of New Orleans.
OK, must take my tired self for another round of caffeine before I fall asleep on the couch and Shoo decides to tear the house down…

Nice job getting the 10 miles in. Hope you manage to make it through the day. Don't suppose you can convince Shoo a nap sounds really fun? Anyway, I look forward to hearing more about your spring marathon plans– have a great weekend!

That's the down side of working out so late. Half your body is exhausted and half is jacked up on endorphans. Good luck with the marathon plan. New Orleans would be hot but awesome.

Nice job getting the 10 miles done so late and on a treadmill! I can't sleep after working out late either so I feel your pain. My friends run the New Orleans 1/2 every year and love it. Good luck figuring out the marathon plan!

I bow down to you and your 10 treadmill miles!! I always have trouble sleeping if I run later in the evening. Good luck picking your marathon, sounds like you've got a couple good options!

I do the after bed time run once a week, and it just kills me. The planning stage for a marathon is the best part! Hope you're able to find one that makes for a great race and vacation.

Congrats on the 10 miles. The most I've run on a treadmill was 7. And that was 7 too many.Hope you get some sleep soon!

I read somewhere, at sometime, that it takes about 3 hours for our body temp to cool off after a run, so it's prime for making us sleepy for bed if we run at like 6 or 7 pm, but much later than that and it definitely keeps us up!

I just get too damn warm after working out, so there's no way I could get to sleep after working out like that. Props to you for doing 10 on the mill, though.. that's dedication. Have a great weekend!

Wow. 10 miles on the treadmill. Good idea watching a movie.I hope you find a great spring marathon to run. Too bad Spring break doesn't fall in the beginning of June. San Diego is a great place to vacation and the Rock-n-Roll is a good race.

My friend did the Mardi Gras one a couple of years ago–she said it was hot but kind of flat, I believe. Did you research each one on http://www.marathonguide.com to get reviews of the course?Did you like 27 Dresses? I loved the bar scene with the Benny and the Jets song–definite chemistry between those two actors. "What are you, the lyric police?"

Put your oxygen mask on first

Last week was a hard week. I was dealing with a couple of really stressful things, as well as just having a lot going on. And I responded poorly. I skipped a few workouts and I ate my feelings. (And then I went to Costco and bought ALL the carbs so I could continue eating […]
