You know your life is quiet and you aren’t running when you can’t even come up with 3 things on a Thursday. Perhaps I could talk about not running or not sleeping. But how exciting is that?
1. My kids have never had sunburns before this year. I’ve always used the zinc oxide based lotions and never had a problem. Not this year. Both boys have been burned twice in the last three weeks. Both times we were at the pool for three hours, and even with extra applications, they both ended up fried. So, my tri and runner friends, what are your sunblock tips? Got a brand that stays on through constant immersion for three hours? Or one that the second coat goes on well on damp bodies and soaks in fast? Give me all your tips so I can keep my fair skinned boys from another painful sunburn the next time we hit the pool.
2. RevolveDC has notified me of the winner of the 5 pack of rides! The winner is Courtney of Running with Perseverance! Thanks to everyone who entered. Courtney, email me at mcmmamaruns at gmail.com for your code and directions on how to use it.
And a question for you all:
Running is my anti-depressant. I am hanging in there with just staying active, but I’m having a really hard time falling asleep at night. Thankfully, once I fall asleep, I sleep soundly, but it takes FOREVER to relax without my run. Got any tried and true suggestions for winding down?
Deep breathing and melatonin. Stop by and I can give you a few tablets, call or text first.
Shower and a cup of decaf tea!
It takes me forever to fall asleep, and I rarely stay asleep, so I have no tips. Sorry. =(
I have been very lucky in the past few years, escaping sunburns (except a mild one on my head where my hair parts), but this week I got ROYALLY sunburned at the pool. Painful and annoying. I hope your sons heal up quickly. Again, though, no tips. Aren’t you glad I bothered to comment? LOL Sorry.
I have read when you’re active you should reapply every two hours.
OMG! This is crazy. I just went to RevolveDC for the first time tonight with Carly! It was a blast and I will definitely put my rides to good use!
As for sleep, NatureMaid has melatonin fastmelts that I’ve used a few times and they seem to work well.
Would your boys wear surf shirts/rash shirts? They’re pretty popular over here because Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Schools even insist that kids wear them to swimming lessons. When they wear the shirts you only have to worry about their faces and whatever skin’s not covered by the shirt.
I burn really easily and I tried all the ‘natural’ mineral-based sunblocks and had allergic reactions to all of them.
What works for me? Neutrogena Ultimate Sport Sunscreen, Broad Spectrum SPF 70. I absolutely swear by it. I coat myself in it religiously.
It’s impossible to keep them covered in the pool and water with sublock! I totally agree with the rash guards.
As for falling asleep, I totally have to take a shower at night or I can’t fall asleep, even if I took a shower after my workout in the morning. I think it’s all about circulation for me. So I also try to massage my feet thoroughly to relax all the different parts of the body, if you are into reflexology. And at the worst case scenario, I take a benedryl. Again, I think it’s because of the circulation thing. Good luck!
