Last week, I met up with a friend for coffee. This may have been the first time I’ve actually sat down and talked to this friend, as opposed to being covered in sweat and cursing his name. See, C.J. is a personal trainer and running coach. We’ve hung out at races together (note that we haven’t raced together ’cause he’s way faster than I am) and I’ve hired him on occasion to make me lift weights.
But C.J. has recently started an awesome new project and I wanted to hear all about it. After our meet up, I figured all my DC peeps should hear about it too.
So, what is The FitBase? Well, right now, it’s the beginnings of a database of all the gyms, classes, and personal trainers in the greater DC area. Doing a search of my zip code brought up all of the local options that I was aware of as well as a few I wasn’t. If you login (free and easy), you can see the address, a link to the facility’s website, as well as some other options. The plan is to eventually include class schedule information and specials. Eventually, they’d like to not only offer introductory specials to fitness facilities, but to also provide you with your own individual concierge who will help you find the right options for you.
In addition to the database, The FitBase is also a great source of information.
There’s the “FitStream” where you can read blog posts from the Washingtonian, DC Fit Crasher, and Wicked Healthy Washingtonian, to name just a few. (Yes, my blog is included. Do you write a fitness blog in the DC area and want to be on the FitStream? Let me know and I’ll make sure you get added.)
The FitBase also offers original articles from its team. Some articles, like the one about DC Swimming Pool options, are specific to the DC area. Others, such as the tips for taking a dance fitness class, are useful regardless of your location.
Right now, The FitBase is fairly new, but they’ve got a great start and big dreams. I can’t wait to see them reach their goals!
(Disclaimer: I am friends with the founder. All opinions are my own.)
Oh, I’d love to be included — I think? email me?
That’s pretty cool…maybe they’ll expand it to all major metro areas some day 🙂 Terrific idea!
Well that’s a fantastic idea and I’m sure he’s thought of ways to nationalize it but its got my gears a turnin’.
And oh, it makes me miss D.C.!
Such an awesome Idea, I hope it takes off…..and I wish I was closer to DC for that!
