OK, maybe that wasn’t the real name of the race. It was one of those races with a really cool name like “turkey trot”, but for us it was definitely all about beating the chihuahua.
I’ve run the local (as in runs right past my house) Turkey Trot for the last 5 years. I know I missed the first one as I ran literally right through it on a morning run when Shoo was a newborn. This year was the first year I convinced the boys to do it with me.
To say that Shoo and Jones don’t like walking is a bit of an understatement. Shoo has more energy than any one person needs, but he’d rather be on a bike or a scooter. Jones, well, he’d rather just hang with his computer and books. Thankfully, it was sunny and not too chilly and we knew a huge percentage of the 3000ish runners.
It still only took about a quarter mile until the whining started. Seriously.
Enter the chihuahua. Both of my boys have a healthy competitive gene. There was no way they were going to finish behind a chihuahua. Every time the chihuahua caught up to us, the boys would yell “Beat the Chihuahua” and sprint ahead.
See Shoo sprinting away from me in the red jacket…
Our final time? 52:12, but they did, indeed, beat the chihuahua.

and the whining? nonstopmadethisnondrinkerlongforwine.
You gotta have a race goal! Mine is usually to beat an old man or a child.
My boys used to be exactly the same. Thank goodness for the incentive of a dog that looks like a rat.
LOVE this. Hahhaha.. Boys.
This is hilarious. That would actually be the best name ever for a race.
Ha!
Beat the chihuahua. What a great motivator.
You should start a race series with that theme!
