Beer Geek and I ditched the kids for a day and night of beer fun around Charlottesville. We recently discovered a nice triangle of a brewery and two brewpubs, as well as a nice B&B. We headed south around noon and got to Starr Hill Brewery with a bit of time to spare before their tour. We stopped at the tasting bar and got to taste all of their yummy beers. (Free, BTW and they are extremely generous). Here I am feeling nice and mellow about halfway through the tasting. I think I was watching the bartender explain their beers to someone. I thought Beer Geek was off taking pictures of brewing equipment, but apparently he was also snapping pics of me.
Stop 2 was Devil’s Backbone Brewpub. It was super busy, which was a bit surprising as it was kind of remote and we got there around 4pm. No worries though. We found seats at the bar and had a sampler and some green chili cheese fries. The beers were decent, but just off the mark from being really good. It’s a pretty new pub though, so I’m sure they’ll work out the kinks soon. Here I am at the bar, in front of all their taps.
Next we made a quick stop at our B&B, the Afton Mountain Bed and Breakfast. We checked in and then verified that some friends would be meeting us for dinner. Then it was time to head to the third beer tasting.
Blue Mountain Brewing has a small “bar food” menu – sandwiches and pizza and the like and REALLY good beers. We got a sampler and one of their pizzas – the brat pizza (I would later regret this). J and J, some of our really close friends, showed up and we got to hang out with them sans kids for the first time in probably 7.5 years! It was awesome to actually have a conversation without constant kid interruption. Here I am at Blue Mountain. The evening was awesome, but the weather started getting nasty, so we headed back to the B&B. Unfortunately, I woke up at 11 with a horrible stomach ache, likely courtesy of the pizza, and I’m still having trouble eating anything other than bland stuff. It was a real bummer because the B&B had an awesome breakfast for us and I could barely eat any.
Here’s what we woke up to this morning:
My tummy ache has continued all day. We even went to our favorite Tex-Mex place with my parents this evening and I ate just a few bites. I tried running on the treadmill and barely made it 2 miles. Hopefully, I’ll feel better tomorrow. We are expecting 5 or so inches of snow tonight, so any running tomorrow will likely be on the ‘mill. Sigh.
All in all, it was an AWESOME weekend and I highly recommend all the places we went! I was able to get some neat stuff for the auction basket as well.
(I’ll add links later. I need to get some kids to bed now…)
Sounds like a WONDERFUL getaway!Hope your tummy’s feeling better π
Ginger tea may help. Hope you feel better.

Sounds like a wonderful weekend getaway (minus tummy turmoil)
hope you feel better soon, and hopefully the weather people will be wrong!
Sounds like it was a fabulous getaway. I hope your stomach issue is better.Great photos!
What a fun weekend! I am looking forward to the snow!! Most we have had all year!
Looks like a great weekend! Mmm beer…
Did you run into Viper? LMAO! Sounds like a great time π
I’m glad your stomach hurts because I didn’t see ONE mention in this post of sending ME any of this beer!(Joke! Feel better, Sister Denial, Patron Saint of Beer Lushes, who drinks 47 different beers, then eats one slice of pizza and gets a tummy ache and concludes, rationally enough, “Musta been the pizza!” O, yeah, it musta been!)In that first pict, you got your “I’d Leave Beer Geek For You!” face on while you’re looking at the bartender. But then there’s your wedding ring, plain as day and big as life! HAHAHAHA!!! Way to send mixed messages, Sister Denial!Sounds like a good trip, except from the – *ahem* – PIZZA that hurt your belly!Mmmmm, beeeeerrrrrr …
Looks like a wonderful weekend! Love the “mellow face” photo (and I also think it’s sweet when someone’s taking pictures of you and you don’t realize it. As long as it’s your spouse, of course, and not some random wacko).
What a fun weekend! Hope your stomach is better.
Sounds wonderful!I LOVE brewpubs. I have actually bartended at a few back in the day.Every time I drink them now though I always get a stomach ache. It stinks because I love brews so much!Glad you had a good time, even with the upset stomach.
Looks like you had fun! I love the mellow-happy-content look… that can only mean the beer and the environment were great.I hope your tummy feels better soon. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the beer. π
sounds like a great getaway. I wish we had “beer country” like that around here. I would rather do a beer tour than a wine tour any day. :-)I am sorry about your tummy.
LOVE the pic with the taps, how cute. He was sneaking pics of you! Sounds like a blast.
