Confession: I am not good about cross training and I like to take the path of least resistance when it comes to exercise.
I can’t tell you how often I’ve said I’m going to take a class or hit the gym and just not done it. I’m much better about doing workouts in my home. (Not as good as I am about running, because well, I have a love affair with running, but definitely better than if I actually have to leave the house). Despite that, I’ve maintained a membership in a gym for the last year, so that I could occasionally do cardio besides running.
Not any more. Beer Geek and I have been talking for a while about setting up a home gym in what used to be the boys’ playroom. At 15 and 11, most of their “toys” are small and expensive AKA electronics. Their remaining toys that take up a lot of space (huge bricks/building collection) were moved to their rooms years ago, so the “playroom” had just become a place where toys gathered dust. I made some progress when I got the new treadmill in March, but I finished the process this December to complete the transformation.
Thanks to Kohl’s, it’s possible to do this without breaking the bank. Their fitness equipment selection includes an awesome variety of ellipticals, bikes, rowers, and more with prices that make it possible to create a small home gym on most budgets.
The ProForm Easy Strider comes loaded with features that you would see in much more expensive elliptical: Inertia Enhanced Flywheel, SMR, Upper Body Grips, Transport Wheels, IPOD Compatible Audio, On-board 8 week weight loss programming & Workout Fan. It also has front mech ellipticals, which creates a smaller footprint than rear mech ellipticals. I may have a room we can dedicate, but that doesn’t mean I have unlimited space. (And depending on how we rearrange the room, I may be stepping over it to get to the treadmill LOL.)
One of my favorite ways to cross train is a rowing machine. I love that it uses my muscles so differently than running. The Stamina Magnetic Rowing Machine is quiet and comfortable and doesn’t take up a lot of space. I’m planning to add a few minutes of rowing 3-4 times a week to my cross training plan.
I confess – I have the best job in the world. I work from my house on my own schedule. I’m totally excited about this ProForm Desk Bike because much of the work I do can be done while pedaling. Being able to set my computer on a stable platform while I bike is a huge plus, whether I’m working or just reading. And when I want a real workout? I can just remove the tray and adjust the tension. It’s also got a great space saving design, so it can be put in the corner when I need more floor space.
And when you’re done with your workouts? The BackTrac Back Massager will work out all the kinks in your neck and back!
Obviously, a home gym does not have to be as extensive as this. A cardio machine, some weights, and a few other pieces will totally do the trick. Luckily, Kohl’s Fitness collection has a huge variety of equipment at all price points, so creating the perfect gym for your house and your financial situation couldn’t be easier!

I would really love to get that desk bikes for any days that I work from home. I’m going to look into that for sure!
wow that’s some great gear! I would like a home rower to play around with. Having a great home gym is key for me and really keeps me doing strength training
So cool! I read Mindy at RoadRunner girl got the same equipment! I like the bike with the desk! Just think how much multi tasking could go on!
I had no idea Kohls had fitness equipment! I need that rower!
Oh man, how cool would it be to get some work done on the bike?! I love it. I also want to try that back massager.
These all look awesome. I totally missed the boat on this Kohls promo….I’ve seen a lot of great reviews on it today, I’d love to add a few of the items to my “collection” (‘Milly needs a friend or two). 😉
I had no idea that Kohl’s had fitness equipment! You have a great gym!
Great job on sitting up your gym! I would love to add a rower to by life- can you say, summer arms! Nice review!
I’m with you — I like working out at home. I actually do enjoy gym classes, as you tend to push yourself harder, but with the furkids tying me down, it’s just easier to get it done at home.
Great gym!!! I love all the pieces, the rower is my favorite!
That’s a sweet set up! We have an elliptical that I use to warm up before doing weights, and my husband uses a few times a week. I hate rowing even though I choose it first at OTF. That back massager looks good!
This looks so awesome! I have been working on my home gym too, definitely need the massager!!
