If you've been reading my blog for a while, you'll remember that last year I decided to run 13 half marathons in 79 days. It wasn't just an arbitrary goal - I wanted to reach Venus level with the Half Fanatics. OK, well maybe that is arbitrary LOL. Of course, that got me 13 for 2015 and that just wasn't going to fly, so I found 2 more half marathons. And then it got all crazy up in here and I ran 2 more. Oops. 17 half marathons in one year. … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #17 for 2014: Jacksonville Bank Half Marathon
Jacksonville Bank Half Marathon December 28, 2014 2:17:04 Temp: high 50s/low 60s with clouds and then fog What I wore: hat, short sleeve shirt, Skirt Sports Happy Girl skirt, PROCompression socks, and my Altra Intuitions I went into this race with very low expectations. I had only done 4 double digit runs since JUNE! and 3 of those were other races. I had thought I'd get my training act together in November and December, but I struggled with a weird soreness across the top of my toes and ended up taking lots of non-running days. Despite a slightly chilly start, the weather was predicted to warm up quickly, so I made the decision to run a bit faster than my recent races and training indicated I could do for 13.1. I wanted to … [Read more...]
Tuesdays on the Run: Will Run for Bling!
Obviously, running for bling is a topic near and dear to my heart. After all, my blog is called "MCM Mama runs for beer and bling." And since I wrote about beer (cupcakes) yesterday, today is a good day to talk about bling with Patty and April and all of our awesome #TuesdaysontheRun participants. [Tweet "Do you run for bling? Show us your favorite! #Tuesdaysontherun #runchat #bling"] As you might imagine, having run 2 full marathons and 37! half marathons, I have a bit of bling. A few years ago, I had my dad build me a shelf for my medals. Apparently I was a little short-sighted. Then: Now: … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #16 for 2014: Appalachian Series – West Virginia
Appalachian Series - West Virginia October 11, 2014 2:35:55 Temp: high 50s and POURING at the start What I wore: hat, short sleeve shirt, Skirt Sports Happy Girl skirt, PROCompression socks, Brooks Essential Run jacket, and my Altra Intuitions As I mentioned, I was absolutely not trained for this race. I hadn't run longer than a 7 mile run since August. So, I went into this knowing I'd likely not be able to run the whole thing. Added to the fun of being undertrained was the weather prediction: rainy with a side of wind. After a relatively uneventful drive down, we stayed at some local cabins that catered to the ATV crowd. The cabin was awesome. The partying until all hours of the night in the cabins that surrounded us? Not … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #15 for 2014: Madison Mini Marathon
Madison Mini Marathon August 16, 2014 2:27:11 Temp: mid 60ss and crazy humid (something close to 90%) What I wore: hat, short sleeve shirt, Skirt Sports Happy Girl skirt, PROCompression socks, and my trusty Altra Intuitions (my very first pair, which I have now retired from racing) Friday Evening Kim arrived in Wisconsin and my dad and I picked her up at the airport (after a slight detour to Ale Asylum since her flight was delayed). We immediately headed to South Union to pick up our packets. Pick up went smoothly and we just happened to run into Jess from Run with Jess and her family. After some time chatting, we headed back to my parents' house and an early bedtime. Race Morning I had my usual pre-race … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #14 for 2014: Achill Island, Ireland
Achill Island Half Marathon July 5, 2014 2:27:35 Temp: high 50s and sunny, with occasional random sprinkles What I wore: hat, short sleeve shirt, Skirt Sports Happy Girl skirt, PROCompression socks, and my trusty Altra Intuitions Race Morning This race did not start until 10:30am, so I slept until about 8 and then had breakfast at the B&B we were staying in. The morning before I had a huge Irish breakfast, but I knew my stomach would not like to run on that. Instead, I had a few pieces of bread with jelly. I had been panicking about the weather for days as it had been cold and there had been more than a few torrential downpours. Shockingly, it was sunny with a light breeze at the start, so I left my jacket and arm … [Read more...]
Blog Spotlight: Vegas Mother Runner
If you follow me on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, you know I arrived home yesterday evening from Ireland. It was an absolutely amazing two weeks, but the flight home was rough (sat on the plane for 2.5 hours before takeoff due to a maintenance issue). I'm totally jetlagged (yes, I did wake up at 4am), I have to do a ton of laundry (Irish dryers leave a lot to be desired, so I only washed what I absolutely had to), and we have zero food in the house. So, today, I'm spotlighting another half crazy mom! Don't worry, soon I'll be filling you feed with a ton of posts about our trip and the half marathon (#14 for 2014!) that I ran while I was there. (I expect to run this feature twice a month. If you'd like to be featured, shoot me an … [Read more...]
Scott James Jewelry Review
This spring was kind of a big deal for me. I knew I wanted to buy myself something to commemorate the completion of 13 half marathons in 79 days. I don't expect to do anything quite that big again for a while, so I knew I wanted something special but had no idea what. Enter Scott James Jewelry. (Disclaimer: they ended up giving me the jewelry, but I was prepared to purchase it. Their website is the source of all of my photos except the bottom one.) I first saw their jewelry at the Expo for ZOOMA because they were a sponsor. In fact, they had created a few special charms for ZOOMA. While I love those charms, I didn't want to commemorate that race specifically (my medal, the charm on the medal, and the clothing I bought took … [Read more...]
Journey to Venus
A little over a year ago, I decided I wanted to move up a level in Half Fanatics. Much like when I randomly announced I wanted to run a marathon, not a lot of thought went into the decision. Apparently, I'm much more of a jump first, figure it out later kind of girl than I realized. Surprisingly, Beer Geek was totally on board with my idea. (I think he just really wanted me to do another 5 half marathons in 5 days and didn't realize what he was getting in to.) I knew I'd kick off the fun with RNR USA. I hadn't run it in a few years and knew that it was exactly 78 days from ZOOMA Annapolis. Boom! Start and finish settled. Since we'd already established that I would spend spring break running the Riverboat Series, that was … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #13 for 2014: ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon
ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon May 31, 2014 2:22:35 Welcome to Venus! 13 half marathons in 79 days = FINISHED!!! Temp: high 50s and sunny, definitely warmer at the end What I wore: hat, short sleeve shirt, Skirt Sports Happy Girl skirt, PROCompression socks, and my trusty Altra Intuitions Race Morning I got up at 5am and slowly got ready. I was sharing a room with Sue, so it was fun to chat while we were getting ready. We ended up walking over to the start instead of driving. The walk took less than 10 minutes. I heard from others that parking was a breeze too. Seems like you can't go wrong either way. We met up with the Ambassadors for a photo op and then another one with MRTT and then it was go … [Read more...]
ZOOMA Annapolis race weekend
I don't even know where to begin. This past weekend was just AWESOME. So.much.amazingness. In fact, it was so awesome that I'm doing a weekend recap and a race recap. Yes, it was that good. After a 3:30am wakeup to get Jones and Beer Geek off on an orchestra field trip and then a morning spent with Shoo and his class at the monuments on the Mall, I finally hit the road to Annapolis. Because I had to leave so late, traffic was not awesome and it took me almost twice as long as normal, but I got there. I quickly checked into the Loew's where I got the coolest room key ever. Yes, I kept my key as a souvenir! I popped into the expo and couldn't resist buying myself a souvenir! I also ran into a few of the ZOOMA ambassadors, so got to … [Read more...]
