I don't go without my mat and my nuunToday, I took a step outside my comfort zone. Not way, way outside, but just enough outside to challenge myself. A new yoga studio opened in Arlington recently, called Mind the Mat. As part of their opening, all classes this week were free. Who doesn't like free?It was a typical crazy morning and I barely made it on time. Like many places in this area, it doesn't have it's own parking lot, but there was plenty of paid parking on the street. It's a long narrow room and the class was near its maximum size, but the floors were new hard wood(I like that from a clean standpoint LOL) and there were lots of windows letting in natural light. The instructor informed us that she … [Read more...]
Functional Fitness
I freely admit that the main reason I run is the mental health benefits. Running pulls me up when I'm feeling the pull down towards depression. Running takes the edge off when my stress level heads into the stratosphere. Running provides release when I'm about to boil over. But, I'm really bad about doing anything besides running. I might hit the elliptical on days when I can't run. I manage to do my chiro subscribed exercises a few times a week. I almost never occasionally hit the weight machines at the gym.The last few days, though, I've gotten some amazing workouts and I haven't lifted a single weight. I've just been active in my everyday life. On Thursday, as I shared with you, I helped … [Read more...]

Gonna be sore tomorrow
Shoo and I had our weekly exercise class today. Most weeks, he runs around the room, while I'm able to get a workout in. Today he alternated between being clingy and trying to prevent me from doing what I was supposed to do. This made my workout amazingly harder. When he was clinging, it was just an extra 35 pounds while doing step and squats. It was a little more challenging when I was trying to do situps with him pushing my shoulders back down. The most difficult part, however, was pushing up to the plank position with him lying on my back. I may not be able to lift my arms tomorrow LOL. We've started looking at houses to rent in Rockland, ME for our vacation. We did that a few years ago in Ithaca, NY and it was awesome to have … [Read more...]
Baby Steps
This week's TIART topic at the Runner's Lounge is strength training, Pre-kids, I used to work out at the office gym 4 or 5 times a week. At least two of those days, I did strength training for about 45 minutes. I still preferred cardio, but I did my weights and saw some nice muscle definition. Fast forward 8 years and 2 kids and the abs ain't what they used to be. My legs are strong from all the running and my arms are strong from toting around a three year old, but muscle definition is seriously lacking. Add in age related metabolism slow down and it's not a pretty sight. One of my goals for the year was to start doing strength training. Since I always put it off when it involved even a 15 minute commitment, I decided I'd do 5 … [Read more...]
