It's been a while since I visited my goals for the year. I'm beginning to think about next year, so I thought I'd check in and see how I'm doing this year. 1) Run at least three half marathons, with the eventual goal of a sub-2 hour half. All done, with two of them at sub-2. Revised goal: Beat 1:30 at the Army 10 miler in October. This is not looking likely. I'm just not feeling speedy lately, so I may just take it easy on this race and actually try to pay attention to where we are running. I've run near the monuments during races before, yet I really have never notice them LOL. I'd at least like to meet my finish time from the last time I ran this race, which was 1:35. We'll see. 2) Run races in at least three new states (but I'm … [Read more...]
Home again home again plus monthly goal review
We flew home yesterday on one of the easiest, "no issues" flights we've ever had. Our luggage even came so fast that the boys and I were already waiting outside when Beer Geek called to say he was on the way back from the airport with the car (he cabs home and picks us up so we don't have to travel with carseats). We planned to head to our favorite Mexican place, but they had long lines, so we hit Rock Bottom Brewery instead. We had a beer that was a mix of their brown and porter and aged in bourbon barrels. Wow! It had just enough bourbon flavor to be interesting, but not so much that I couldn't stand it (bourbon is not an alcohol I like. Blame it on college...). It seemed more alcoholic than the usual beer, which was confirmed … [Read more...]
May recap, goals revisited, and Saucony maiden run
1) Run at least three half marathons, with the eventual goal of a sub-2 hour half. All done, with two of them at sub-2. Revised goal: Beat 1:30 at the Army 10 miler in October.2) Run races in at least three new states (but I'm aiming for 5).Still looking good here. Delaware is DONE. Florida is DONE. Wisconsin is in June. Maine is in August. I'm looking at doing Minnesota in June as well, so I may be able to pull off 6 states this year...3) Workout five times a week. I need to redefine working out in my mind. Running more than 4 days a week is too hard on my body. For some reason, I do better with four longer runs than with five shorter runs. So, if I can get in four good quality runs and try to walk two days a week, I'm going … [Read more...]
March in Review
1) Run at least three half marathons, with the eventual goal of a sub-2 hour half. Surprisingly, this seems to be my easiest goal! I shocked myself by finishing the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon-2009 in 1:59:24. I did not expect that, given the hills, but I'll take it. Now I'm aiming for a sub-9 minute pace. I have the Pacer's Running Festival Half in May (and I still don't know what I'm doing about the Marine Corps Historic Half ). I'm still planning to do the Philadelphia Distance Run in the fall with a friend. 2) Run races in at least three new states (but I'm aiming for 5).Still looking good here. Delaware is DONE. Maine is back on, just a different race - the Lobster Festival 10k. I've also signed up for an Earth Day 5K in Florida … [Read more...]
The downside of goals
So far this year, having specific goals has gone a long way towards keeping me active. I've made it through the worst of the winter (fingers crossed) in good shape. But, as I attempt to begin a taper, I'm hitting a mental road block. I had the official goal of working out 5 days a week and an unofficial goal of hitting 20 miles a week. So far, I've done really well with both. BUT, I need to give my body a break. I know I'll run a stronger half marathon if I take it easier next week and take two full days off before the race. One of the things I've definitely learned is that my body needs rest. Full on, do nothing but walking, rest. And I'll do it, but there definitely will be some guilty feelings involved (even though my logical … [Read more...]
February in Review
So far, having goals, rather than resolutions seems to be working for me...1) Run at least three half marathons, with the eventual goal of a sub-2 hour half. I have my first half of the year in less than two weeks. It's the Citizens Bank Caesar Rodney Half Marathon-2009 in Wilmington, DE. I took a look at the elevation and it looks like miles 6.5-8 or so will suck because of a big hill. Fun (not). I also recently signed up for the Pacer's Running Festival Half in May to replace the Marine Corps Historic Half in May and I'm pretty sure I'm going to do the Philadelphia Distance Run in the fall with a friend. Who knows when/if the sub-2 will happen. Between sick kids and snow, I didn't hit as many long runs as planned. I'm hoping to … [Read more...]
January in Review
When I make "New Year's Resolutions", I usually not only break them by the end of January, but often completely forget what they were. This year I didn't make any resolutions, but I did set goals. At the end of every month, I'm going to revisit them and see how I'm doing and tweak the goals if needed.1) Run at least three half marathons, with the eventual goal of a sub-2 hour half. Right on track for at least running three. Not sure about the sub-2 hour part. I have the Citizens Bank Caesar Rodney Half Marathon-2009 in Wilmington, DE in March. I've also signed up for the Marine Corps Historic Half in May and I'm looking at one of the Philadelphia ones for the fall.2) Run races in at least three new states (but I'm aiming for 5).Still … [Read more...]
Feeling sluggish and non-committal
I've only run 3 miles in the last four days and I'm starting to feel, well, just kind of blah. I've been eating too much most days and even when I eat a reasonable amount, too much of it is cookies and other not so healthy stuff. And water? What's that? All I've been drinking is beer, wine, coffee and soda. So, even though I haven't actually gained much this holiday season, I'm feeling way too fluffy and beginning to get the "I need to run or I'm going to hurt someone" feeling. In addition to all the holiday stuff, yesterday we had the pleasure of flying home. Our flight was 3 hours late and then I had to wait an extra hour and a half for our luggage. Our airline had three flights coming from Milwaukee here and they mixed up the … [Read more...]
