#LetsMove at the White House

#LetsMove at the White House

If you follow me on pretty much any form of social media, you know that on Tuesday I got to attend an awesome event at the White House. I was part of a group of about 150 bloggers who were invited to participate in "A Conversation on the Health of our Nation's Children." As you might imagine, I was pretty excited to be invited and spent Monday evening frantically texting a couple of friends for fashion advice because, umm, my usual fitness attire was not going to be appropriate. Once I got the outfit settled, it was time to stress about whether or not the Metro would be running. (Thankfully it was that day and waited to do the big shut down the day after the event. Also, Beer Geek informed me later that it only takes 80 minutes to … [Read more...]

Nava Health and Vitality Center: Results {{Giveaway}}

Nava Health and Vitality Center offered me an opportunity to try their intake services and compensated me for this post. A few weeks ago, I headed over to the Nava Health and Vitality Center to meet with one of their staff and get blood drawn for a variety of tests. The experience as a whole was awesome and I couldn't wait to hear what the tests actually showed. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to find out. Once again, the process went smoothly and quickly, without feeling at all like I was being rushed. I only waited a few minutes each time in their lobby, which I spent checking out their books and supplements. (There are actually a couple of books I've added to my reading list now.) For this visit, I met with a … [Read more...]

Nava Health and Vitality Center, Visit 1

Disclaimer: I received compensation for this post, but all opinions are my own. A few weeks ago, I got a chance to visit the Nava Health and Vitality Center for an evening discussion. Nava is an integrative wellness center "where clients can experience a rich blend of Eastern and Western wellness techniques to overcome a variety of common health issues and achieve optimal wellness." They offer a whole plan to help you on the road to the best you, as well as "a la carte" services like massage, chiropractor, acupuncture and a small shop of vitamins, cook books, and other useful products. Last week, I headed over for my introductory visit with them. During this approximately 30 minute long visit, we went over my health history … [Read more...]

The Food Dare Review

The Food Dare Review

Happy weekend after Thanksgiving! Did you eat your weight in sweet potatoes, stuffing, and pie like I did? (Note the lack of mention of turkey - I ate some, but I'm not a fan, so it was a small part of my meal(s).) I don't know about you, but despite a couple of runs, I'm feeling full and weighted down from too many days of too much eating. I was recently given a copy of The Food Dare ebook to review as a member of FitFluential. I finally had a chance to read it this weekend and decided to do it starting on December 1 (actually, I'm doing the first day for the next 3 days as a jump start.) Creator Lindsey Banks DARES you to add a new healthy habit every day for 30 days. She doesn't ask you to give up your favorite holiday foods … [Read more...]

Less Stress, More Joy – Nava Health & Vitality Center

I am receiving compensation for this event and review, but all opinions are my own. Last week I was invited to a talk at the Nava Health and Vitality Center. The topic of the evening centered around enjoying the holidays more, with "less stress, anxiety, weight gain and more happiness, family time and joy." Sounded like a good plan to me, so I was happy to attend. The event took place in the small lobby area of the Nava Health and Vitality Center. Nava is an integrated health center that focuses on the whole you. It offers services from massage to acupuncture to chiropractic care to life coaching to bio-identical hormone optimization therapy. The unique part is that they use what they call the Nava Method to create a plan … [Read more...]

Staying healthy over the holiday

Staying healthy over the holiday

You know I'm a big fan of moving during the holiday season. Why else would I be participating in a bunch of different holiday challenges AND have just joined a gym for the first time in 12 years? Sometimes though, just staying moving is not enough to keep you healthy during the holidays. Sometimes you need to do a little extra self care. Here are my go to tips for making it through the holidays as healthy as possible.   Get enough sleep - I know. So much to do. So many events. So hard to get enough sleep. But make the effort. Your personal sleep needs may vary, but studies have shown that sleep deprivation does affect both your immune system's ability to fight off cold and flu, but also prevents it from recovering as fast. … [Read more...]

My least favorite part of fall: fall allergies

My least favorite part of fall: fall allergies

Disclosure: I received promotional consideration for this post. All opinions expressed are solely my own. I love fall. The weather is cooling off and running is becoming easier. Virginia puts up a gorgeous display of leaves. Soup returns to our menu and dark beers re-appear on the grocery shelves. Every weekend there are options for fall festivals and activities around DC. As a topper, both of my boys have fall birthdays. It really is my favorite time of year. Except for the allergies. I always forget each year that the cat and I suffer from fall allergies. (Yes, the cat.) Every year I think I'm coming down with a cold and then I realize that colds don't usually make my ears itch, so allergies it is. A few doses of my favorite … [Read more...]

Runner’s World Half and Festival discount + coffee!

Runner’s World Half and Festival discount + coffee!

Ok, big news around here - I've been invited to the Runner's World Half and Festival in October. The Runner's World Half and Festival has been on my to do list for a while now, but fall is a busy time around here and the date never really worked for me. Apparently procrastinating worked and now I not only get to run, I get to be one of the bloggers attending all the events. One other cool thing about this year is that Runner's World added a trail race on Friday. I'm excited to run all four races: 3.8 mile trail, 5k, 10k, and half marathon. (Add those numbers up and what do you get...?)  I'm a teensy tiny bit nervous about it being the weekend before Marine Corps Marathon, but I survived two marathons in two days, I think I can manage it, … [Read more...]

Thinking out Loud: Where do I go from here?

Thinking out Loud: Where do I go from here?

You knew it was coming, right? I've finished my major goals for the first half of the year and apparently I'm feeling blasé about the fact that I have 6 half marathons in 6 days in 6 states in September. Eh, what's another state when I've already done 5 in 5 two times? Ahem. I'm joining Amanda from Running with Spoons again for some thinking out loud. I apologize in advance for the minimal pictures and maximum stream of consciousness.   So, if you are my friend on Facebook or like my Facebook page, you've heard whispers of a potential new goal. Yes, the word "Ultra" has been thrown around a few times. … [Read more...]

Hello Fresh Review

Hello Fresh Review

I love to cook. I love to eat even more than I love to cook.  But you know what I really do not like to do? Meal plan. I'm just not that creative and I have picky kids and I get stuck eating the same things over and over again. I have a particularly hard time as it warms up as I have fewer summer options. (Soups are my "thing".) So, when Hello Fresh offered me another box to try, I was all over it. Once again, it was a success. (Check out my previous box!) [Tweet "Get 25% off to try out a week of yummy meals from @HelloFresh #healthychoices"] … [Read more...]

Did you #rockyourcore last week?

Did you #rockyourcore last week?

Last week was... interesting. I made some dietary changes, it warmed up a LOT, allergy season hit, and Beer Geek was on a four day bike ride. All my runs kind of sucked, my core was barely rocked, and my house looks like a bomb went off. … [Read more...]
