Know what's happening this weekend? Ragnar DC and Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon. Know what else is happening. Rain. Lots of rain. Because Hurricane Joaquin. I don't mind running in rain. I don't even mind torrential downpours. But here's the thing: I'm volunteering. Yep, 6 hours for Ragnar and 6-8 hours for WW. I'm pretty sure I will have gills by the end, assuming of course the winds don't blow me away. At least I know how to dress for a rainy volunteer stint. Number 1 rule: If you think you need another layer, you need another layer. Volunteers don't warm up like runners! On the sunny side of things, one of my favorite runner friends is coming in for the race. It feels like forever since I last saw Kim, but really … [Read more...]
Post-Sandy + mind strengthening run
Today I had 7 miles on the plan. It was the only day that I could get in a "long run". I had been cold all day, so I decided to run near home in case I got to warm from overdressing or didn't warm up enough and needed a jacket. (As it turns out, a half zip long sleeve and capris were exactly what I needed to wear.) Anyways, I wandered through my neighborhood, assessing the post Sandy state. As it turns out, most of us got very very lucky. The number of trees down was small compared to previous storms and the number of trees who had dead on hits on houses were small. Seriously, the majority of trees that came down fell in the only possible way they could have fallen and not done devastating damage. (This is not to say that the … [Read more...]
So far, so good
We got lucky. I woke up this morning to my cell phone ringing. It was Beer Geek's work checking to see if he was teleworking or taking the day off. Why they needed to know at 6:48am, I'll never understand. But, more importantly, I woke to a warm house with power, two soundly sleeping children, and a live gecko. And I am more thankful than I can put into words. Maybe we over prepared by moving to the basement. Yes, us, the gecko, and the fish all slept in the basement. Maybe the suitcase packed with two days worth of clothes for everyone was overkill. Maybe the strategic parking of the cars was unnecessary. We got lucky. We aren't 100% out of the woods as it is still raining and a bit windy (and we have a couple of … [Read more...]
Random Facts Friday
1. I go through weird food ruts. For a while it was Arugula, then it was brussel sprouts, right now? Broccoli slaw. I eat it nearly every day. And it's not the salad version with the crunchy stuff and cranberries and stuff. Just plain old broccoli slaw sauteed on the stove. 2. I'm a little nervous about Hurricane Sandy. The derecho this summer threw everyone for a loop and it sounds like this may be similar. There's not much I can do about the big trees and I'm pretty well stocked for food/water. So, what am I stressing about? Getting crickets for the gecko and how to keep the gecko warm enough. Pretty sure there's not going to be a run on crickets on Saturday... 3. I posted on FB about getting prepared for the storm. My … [Read more...]
