Today on Friday Five with Cynthia, Mar, and Courtney, the topic was a day in the life. Since I did one on Wednesday, I figured I'd do something different. I am currently about halfway through my training for Marine Corps Marathon using the Hansons Marathon Method, so I thought I'd share my impressions so far. 1. The mileage is higher than you realize. I'll admit, I looked at the training plan before I read the book. And the mileage didn't scare me. Well, some of the runs are longer than they are on the plan because if you are doing a tempo or a speed workout, you are expected to run a warm up mile (or 3) and a cool down mile. End result? I'm spending a lot more time running than I expected. 2. 6 days a week is a lot more than 5 … [Read more...]
Headsweats hat review and giveaway
I ran 140 miles last month. Guess how many of those miles included a hat on my head... Yep, 140 of them. When I first became a runner, I had short hair. Too short to be put back in any way, but long enough to end up in my eyes. For a while, I ran with the front pulled up on top of my head with a scrunchy. Thankfully, there are no pictures in existence of that goofy look. Then I bought my first running hat and there was no turning back. Since that first hat, I've amassed a pretty large collection. But here's my problem. I have a smallish head, so often the hat is still a bit big, even if I have it adjusted to the smallest possible option. Usually I can find a way to make a hat work, but not always. And I often look … [Read more...]
TOTR: Running free for all
All of us over at Tuesdays on the Run have a little bit of crazy going on in our lives right now, so we decided to make this week be a "free topic" week. So write about any running related topic and link up with April, Patty, and me this week. Real topics resume next week: August 11: Fall Race Schedule August 18: Running Role Models/Runners You Admire August 25: Running Bras I'm packing like a crazy woman (the boys and I are leaving Beer Geek here and heading to Wisconsin). I've also been busy attempting to evict a squirrel from my attic. OK, actually, we did evict him, but he (or probably more accurately she) would like back in and has spent the last two days chewing. Me? I spent the day squirting her with the water hose … [Read more...]
Runner’s World Half and Festival discount + coffee!
Ok, big news around here - I've been invited to the Runner's World Half and Festival in October. The Runner's World Half and Festival has been on my to do list for a while now, but fall is a busy time around here and the date never really worked for me. Apparently procrastinating worked and now I not only get to run, I get to be one of the bloggers attending all the events. One other cool thing about this year is that Runner's World added a trail race on Friday. I'm excited to run all four races: 3.8 mile trail, 5k, 10k, and half marathon. (Add those numbers up and what do you get...?) I'm a teensy tiny bit nervous about it being the weekend before Marine Corps Marathon, but I survived two marathons in two days, I think I can manage it, … [Read more...]
Basil parmesan pasta + Hanson’s week #2
Monday again, huh? Even with a 3 day weekend, the weekend wasn't long enough. I'm counting down the days until vacation... Friday was a holiday around here, so Beer Geek had the day off of work. We both got up early and got out workouts in and then Beer Geek suggested we head to a local beer bar mid-afternoon. Time to chat with my husband + good beer? Yes, please! (One of us doesn't understand the concept of summer beers. Oh, yeah, that's me.) … [Read more...]

Thinking out loud: Hansons Marathon Method
We are 136 days from the Marine Corps Marathon. This translates to slightly less than 20 weeks. Since most marathon training plans run 18 weeks, obviously I've been spending some time thinking about how I plan to train for my fastest marathon. Yes, I do want to PR, which means knocking at least 25 minutes off the faster of my two marathons this spring. So, I'm joining Amanda at Running with Spoons and thinking out loud about my training choices and my chosen plan, Hansons Marathon Method. … [Read more...]

Five veggies to love this summer
I love veggies. LOVE.THEM. I have never been one to not eat my veggies. (All of my healthy eating issues stem from the snacks I eat after my veggies LOL.) My parents tell me that when I was little, they'd serve themselves the vegetable at dinner and not give me any. Then when I'd ask, they'd tell me that those were only for adults, but that I could have some if I'd promise to eat them. Obviously, I was a gullible child. But it worked. I like almost every vegetable now. Except beets. I've never met a beet I like. (And believe me, I've tried every way imaginable to eat them. Apparently if you say that you don't like them, everyone will insist that their recipe makes beets awesome. No. No it does not.) … [Read more...]

TOTR: Best Race Ever
The topic for Tuesdays on the Run today is "Best Race Ever." When Patty, April and I came up with the idea, it immediately brought to mind my friend, GBA Girlfriend, who always has the #bestdayever. And why is it the best day ever? Because there is something good in every day. And I feel much the same way about any race I complete. … [Read more...]
