Here we are bright and early on a Monday morning. (Or really, dark and early. It was a rough start today). I'm joining HoHo and Tricia for the Weekly Wrap and closing out 2015. Last week was a busy week. The boys and I were pleased to have a snowy day in Wisconsin before we left. Shoo got to play in the snow and go sledding with Papa. I got to try out my new Altra NeoShell Lone Peaks. I'm pretty much in love with them and want it to snow lots in Virginia this year. (Review coming soon.) Soon it was time to head home. I am always a mixture of sad and happy when it's time to leave. I was ready to be in my own space again and to see Beer Geek, but I always hate leaving my family. Packing was a bit challenging this year … [Read more...]
The show must go on
"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night..." Perhaps you've been watching the weather predictions. Or maybe you live on the east coast. If not, maybe you didn't know that (despite a lovely 50+ degree day yesterday), the forecast called for a plummeting of temperatures and 5-9 inches of snow in the DC area. Did someone forget to tell Mother Nature that it's March? By 7pm last night, Beer Geek's office was closed and the kids' schools were moments behind. Seriously? It was raining at that point and not that cold, so hard to wrap our heads around one more snow day. Sigh. I opened negotiations on treadmill usage. See, my treadmill sits a mere 15 feet from Beer Geek's desk. It's in a separate room, but there is no … [Read more...]
What is this “school” thing you speak of?
My kids have been out of school or delayed for more days than I can remember. They were out yesterday and will be again today. My elementary school child is making up time on "early release" days and I think my middle school kid just ran out of days. Too bad they can't all go to school on Monday. Ooh, did I say that out loud? Don't get me wrong. I love my kids. Shoo and I even spent a fair amount of time outside yesterday. It took me 2 hours to shovel our sidewalk and dig out my car, which may not sound like it was that hard, but my sidewalk is not very long. Two hours of lifting heavy wet snow. Pretty sure I got my weight lifting in for the day. At least the snow was beautiful. Wanna know what else I did? I ran 9 miles. No, … [Read more...]
Snow? Day + WIAW
This morning, I woke up to closed schools and this: Apparently, this is what a snow day looks like in Virginia. (Actually, it's snowing now and supposedly going to get worse as the day goes on. We'll see.) Not that it really matters. Both boys are sick, so they'd be home with me anyways. In fact, I have the headache that Jones complained of first, so I imagine I'm next. Fun. And Beer Geek is working from home, so quiet is required and a the basement is off limits for most of the day. I've relaxed the electronics rules and I'm hoping to sneak in a run at some point - outside if the roads appear to stay clear. And now for WIAW. I totally failed this week. It's been kind of hectic and I've felt less than awesome, so I totally … [Read more...]

Rescheduling, Volunteering, and Giveaways, oh my!
I am not running today. I am not snow shoveling today. In fact, if I have my way, I'll be doing a whole lot of nothing. Of course, I'm at home with two very active boys (Beer Geek got to go to work today), so I imagine I'll have to do something.ReschedulingMy race calendar has gone a bit awry. The GW Birthday Classic was cancelled due to the snow. The Pacers Love the Run You're With 5K has been rescheduled to February 28th (Note to my non-local peeps: they are offering a virtual option and a really cool t-shirt. If you're interested in running virtually, let me know and I can find get your stuff to you.) I'll be volunteering at the rescheduled race, so stop by and say hi if you are running it. The Capital Hospice 12K has been … [Read more...]

Semi-Wordless Wednesday: View from my windows
Now this is snow I can handle. It's gorgeous, but as you can see in the middle picture, the roads are already down to pavement. THIS is typical Virginia snow. Of course, this is still Virginia, so the kids have no school today. Whatever. I decided last night that if they didn't have school or started late, I'd just move my 13 miles to Thursday. It's supposed to be above freezing all day today and tomorrow, so I should be able to run on the neighborhood roads pretty easily (as long at that UPS guy doesn't run me down.) Instead, I'll spend today "cross training" by shoveling snow, building snowmen, and throwing snowballs. Edited to Add: I have a coupon code for the SunTrust National Marathon and Half Marathon for $10 off if you … [Read more...]
Snow Day
Or more accurately, ice day. Jones was off of school today because our county's schools were closed, as were most others in the region. We slept in late and had a lazy day, which would have been awesome if the boys hadn't been fighting all day. It wasn't that bad out (other than needing to chip the ice off my car - Beer Geek had to climb into the jeep through the rear door as it was the only one that would open), but Jones just wasn't feeling up to going out.Needless to say, by the time Beer Geek got home, I was in NEED of a run. I hit the treadmill for 3.5 miles and felt like I could almost be civil by the time it was done.I'm so ready for the winter to be done. I don't mind cold too much, but I hate snow and ice. The counties … [Read more...]
Nine snowy miles
This is what it looked like in my 'hood this morning. When we woke up, it was snowing and the boys were quite excited to walk to school in it. It continued to snow quite heavily on the walk to and from school, so I was quite surprised we even had school. After dropping Jones off, we walked home and then I drove Shoo to preschool. Today was supposed to be a long run. I do my long runs on Tuesdays as Shoo is in preschool for 5 hours. I figured I'd drop him off and then hit the treadmill. Thanks to my northern readers, I decided I needed to at least try to run outside. I don't have yaktrax and my shoes aren't screwed, but I figured I'd just see how it went. I wanted to do 11 miles and figured that any miles I managed outside would … [Read more...]
