The topic for Tuesdays on the Run today is "Best Race Ever." When Patty, April and I came up with the idea, it immediately brought to mind my friend, GBA Girlfriend, who always has the #bestdayever. And why is it the best day ever? Because there is something good in every day. And I feel much the same way about any race I complete. … [Read more...]

Thankful Friday
Happy day after Thanksgiving! We had a nice day with family and now we will spend the rest of the weekend playing with friends. Win! Today's Friday Five topic is Gratitude, so I'm going to tell you 5 thinks I'm thankful for this year. (And huge thanks to Courtney, Mar, and Cynthia for this fun linkup and for becoming IRL friends.) While I'm thankful for many things in my life - my family, my friends, my health, my home, my running, I thought I'd offer 5 very specific things I'm thankful for right.now. [Tweet "Five things I'm thankful for right now! #happyThanksgiving"] … [Read more...]
#megsmiles
Saturday morning, I was supposed to run the JFK 20k. For a lot of reasons, I just wasn't feeling the love. I tried to argue myself into it and just couldn't. So I DNS'd it and went for a run in my neighborhood in honor of Meg Menzies. There are many posts out there in honor of Meg. And they put into words what we all feel so much better than I ever could. But I need to process my feelings a bit as to why this runner in particular hit home. I'm an urban runner. With the exception of one run a week, I run surrounded by cars. Even that run crosses roads multiple times. I cross major intersections. I run on roads with no sidewalks. I run surrounded by some of the world's most aggressive drivers. I have been lucky. I've had … [Read more...]
Gratitude List + Winners
Today's challenge for Elf for Health is to make a Gratitude List of 20 things we are grateful for. While there are way more than 20 awesome people and things in my life, here are the ones that came to mind. Some are big and some are little, but they all make my life better. 1. Beer Geek - We've been together almost 20 years. No person (or marriage) is perfect, but after 20 years, he's still my favorite person to hang out with. He doesn't just put up with my running. He supports it, instigates new crazy ideas, and drives me around the country pursuing my dreams. 2. Jones - This child has challenged me since day 1. He's made me more open-minded, more patient, and more tired than I ever thought possible. I am in awe of his … [Read more...]

GratiTuesday
I have a lot of big things in my life to be grateful for and, believe me, I don't take those things for granted. But sometimes, you just need to revel in the small things: The weather today is AMAZING! Sunny but cool. I was actually a little bit chilled when I walked Shoo to school this morning. The sweet package I got in the mail from Kindrunner this week. Love it! Walking to school with my younger son everyday. Last year we got out of the habit of walking, but so far this year, Jones has walked every day and Shoo and I have walked every day but one. Did I mention the weather? Such a pleasant walk this morning. These came in the mailbox this week too. Preliminary testing says "awesome!" I bought Jones a … [Read more...]
It’s the people…
I run for myself. I race because the running community is amazing. The examples of goodness from runners, volunteers, first responders, residents of Boston, etc. that have come out of the Boston tragedy are amazing. I am thankful to count many of of these people as friends. … [Read more...]
Thankful
For this person: For these people: And for these people: I am also thankful for all the other awesome people in my life and all the wonderful parts of my life: my health, my job, my home, my running, etc. But I have to admit, right at this very moment, I'm most thankful that this year I'm not cooking the turkey. Happy Thanksgiving Day, y'all! … [Read more...]
So far, so good
We got lucky. I woke up this morning to my cell phone ringing. It was Beer Geek's work checking to see if he was teleworking or taking the day off. Why they needed to know at 6:48am, I'll never understand. But, more importantly, I woke to a warm house with power, two soundly sleeping children, and a live gecko. And I am more thankful than I can put into words. Maybe we over prepared by moving to the basement. Yes, us, the gecko, and the fish all slept in the basement. Maybe the suitcase packed with two days worth of clothes for everyone was overkill. Maybe the strategic parking of the cars was unnecessary. We got lucky. We aren't 100% out of the woods as it is still raining and a bit windy (and we have a couple of … [Read more...]
It’s the little things…
I saw a post on Miss Zippy this week about what makes you happy. I love the list of small things, because of course there are plenty of good big things in my life, but it's the small stuff that can make or break any individual day. So, here's a list of the little things that are making my fall: Coffee and amazing homemade baked goods with friends after school dropoff Bike rides with my family Runs with another mom Cool fall breezes Seeing how excited my son is about his little leopard gecko Needing to wear a sweatshirt with my shorts A quiet cup of coffee before my children wake in the morning The return of dark beers to restaurant menus Having a boss who thinks I can handle anything - and the … [Read more...]
One of those days…
Yesterday started out with a thunderstorm. Which would not have been a problem, Except for an amazing crack of thunder. Which woke Shoo. Way earlier than I wanted. Then I couldn't get in touch with my doctor. Because the lightning had knocked out their power. When I did finally get through, I sat on hold for 20 minutes. Only to be transferred to another patient. Really. So, I went to yoga. Where I sweated my a$$ off. And nearly cried while holding some poses. Then I ran 3 miles. And sweated even more. At which point I could fit into my skinny capris. And then I went to a meeting. That finished with an incredible salmon dinner. And a beer from Mad Fox. As it turns out... It was … [Read more...]
