Happy 4th of July! Hope you have some fun plans for today. I'm joining up with my friends Deborah, Coco, and Lynda for a virtual coffee date. If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that today is my mom's birthday! Happy birthday, Mom! How cool is that to have fireworks on your birthday every year? Of course, everyone dresses up for Shoo's birthday each year too since he's a Halloween baby. My birthday? Just a random day in August... … [Read more...]
A night owl’s guide being a morning runner
Morning running will never by my jam. I am a night owl, through and through and will never be a morning runner by choice. But some of you might have noticed recent early morning running posts on instagram and Facebook. I know. I'm shocked too. But heat, no school, and a challenging training plan have forced me out of bed and out the door. … [Read more...]
TOTR: 2015 Goals Revisted
How is the year half over already? It's totally flying by this year. Since we are halfway through the year, it seemed appropriate to do a goal checkin for Tuesdays on the Run this week. Join Patty, April, and me and tell us how your goals are going.. … [Read more...]
Hansons Marathon Training + Weekend Recap
Last week was my first week of marathon training using the Hansons Marathon Method. I knew from reading their book that it was a tough plan, but it's the perfect plan for where I want to be right now. … [Read more...]
Thinking Out Loud Thursday: End of Year Craziness
It seems like every year at this time I feel like I'm hanging on by the tips of my fingernails. All of the end of the year activities, combined with a few unplanned adventures (lightning'd out tryouts, sore throats, exploding milk jugs) leave me feeling like I'm only a second away from one of the many balls in the air landing on my head. Thankfully, we are almost to the finish line and the normal crazy that is my life will return. … [Read more...]
Thinking out loud: Hansons Marathon Method
We are 136 days from the Marine Corps Marathon. This translates to slightly less than 20 weeks. Since most marathon training plans run 18 weeks, obviously I've been spending some time thinking about how I plan to train for my fastest marathon. Yes, I do want to PR, which means knocking at least 25 minutes off the faster of my two marathons this spring. So, I'm joining Amanda at Running with Spoons and thinking out loud about my training choices and my chosen plan, Hansons Marathon Method. … [Read more...]
TOTR: Hot weather running + Timex GPS watch giveaway
Baby, it's hot outside! OK, maybe I shouldn't complain because my Tuesdays on the Run partners in crime, April and Patty, live in Florida and Arizona. They know hot. But since our topic for the week is hot weather running, I'm going to talk to you about my training plans and give you some tips on how to survive running in the heat. … [Read more...]
Awesome but exhausting weekend
We live a pretty low key life. It's quite infrequent that we have multiple social events in one weekend, but this weekend was the exception to that. I think I need a detox to recover... I'm linking up with Tara and Erin for my weekend recap, so stop by their blogs to see what everyone else is up to. Friday started dark and rainy with a 4am alarm. No, I didn't have a race - Jones had to be at the school by 5am for a field trip. After I delivered him safely onto the bus, I headed back home and went back to sleep for two hours, which totally discombobulated me. The rest of the day was a crazy blur of work, errands, running and kid transporting. Oh, and a mammogram. Because, hey why not schedule that on a crazy busy day? … [Read more...]
TOTR: Sometimes a running break is a good thing
Confession #1: I barely ran in May after I finished my two marathons and Ragnar. Confession #2: It was planned. Today, the day before National Running Day, we've decided that the topic is "why a running break might be a good idea." Be sure to visit my cohosts, Patty at My No Guilt Life and April at Run the Great Wide Somewhere, to see their thoughts on the topic. (And check out all the awesome blog posts below for more thoughts on the topic and on running in general.) OK, so back to me. What? Isn't everything about me? … [Read more...]
Tips for surviving multi day race events
Multi-day race events are becoming increasingly popular. They range from high mileage multiple day races like the Mainly Marathons races and Disney's Dopey to two day lower mileage options like the Frederick Nut Job (5k/half marathon) and the Shamrock marathon's Dolphin and Whale challenges (8k/half or full marathon). Since I've now run 5 half marathons in 5 days at both the Riverboat Series and the Dust Bowl series and two marathons in a row at the Independence Series, plus the Nut Job, I feel like I've learned a few useful things along the way. So, for my free Friday participation with Cynthia, Courtney, and Mar, here are my tips. … [Read more...]
Thinking out Loud: Where do I go from here?
You knew it was coming, right? I've finished my major goals for the first half of the year and apparently I'm feeling blasé about the fact that I have 6 half marathons in 6 days in 6 states in September. Eh, what's another state when I've already done 5 in 5 two times? Ahem. I'm joining Amanda from Running with Spoons again for some thinking out loud. I apologize in advance for the minimal pictures and maximum stream of consciousness. So, if you are my friend on Facebook or like my Facebook page, you've heard whispers of a potential new goal. Yes, the word "Ultra" has been thrown around a few times. … [Read more...]
TOTR: My five favorite running hacks…
It's Tuesday! I'm on Martha's Vineyard and I haven't run since Saturday and I'm kind of ok with that. Instead, I've ridden on 3 ferries, eaten a ton of seafood, and drunk my weight in beer. Yeah, I have this vacation thing down! The topic for today's Tuesdays on the Run is "Running Hacks". Share your favorites with April, Patty and me. Bonus points if you teach me something I didn't know about. 1. Deodorant instead of Glide - Glide is a great invention, but I don't always have it in the house or sometimes forget it when I'm packing for a trip. A good stick deodorant is the next best thing. (Actually, I use it even when I have Glide available. It's perfect for preventing running bra chafe.) 2. Robes from Goodwill as your throw … [Read more...]
