Race Expo Finds

Race Expo Finds

As I've mentioned before, I live in the land of the big Expo. With races like Marine Corps Marathon, Army 10 Miler, and RNR DC, there are plenty of opportunities to head to big expos and find things I never thought I needed. Since today's topic for Tuesdays on the Run is best race expo finds, I'll share those thing that I "needed" that actually turned out to be awesome. I don't generally buy any specific thing (I don't collect race pint glasses, which I'm sure surprises many of you) and most of my favorite brands are not at many expos.  But I've gotten lucky a few times... Once, at the ATM expo, I met Jill from Lift Your Sole and gave her my info. This arrived  in my mailbox one day... Another time, I happened upon a cute … [Read more...]

Bizarre race dreams – have you had them?

Bizarre race dreams – have you had them?

Have you ever dreamt that you slept through your alarm before a race? Or dreamt that you took the wrong shoes (or two shoes from different pairs)? Or woken up with your heart racing because you forgot where your race was? No? Are you sure you are a runner? I only ask because it seems like every runner I know has an anxiety dream at one point or another, which is why today's topic is "race dreams". Patty, Marcia, and I want to hear about yours. I, of course, no longer have crazy dreams the night before a race. Unfortunately, the only reason I don't have those dreams the night before a race is because I don't sleep. I've completely lost the ability to relax and catch some z's. Sigh. Sometimes I don't even try to sleep - I just … [Read more...]

MCM Mama Runs for Bling

MCM Mama Runs for Bling

Welcome to the last "Tuesdays on the Run" for 2015! I can't believe the year is coming to an end already. Wasn't it just yesterday that I got the bright idea to run two marathons in a weekend? (Oh wait, no, yesterday's harebrained idea was to run a 24 or 48 hour race next December.) Anyways, today's topic is "bling"! As in, show us your bling! I want to see what you got this year (after all, I still need to plan 2016...) Somehow, I managed to get 15 medals in 2015. I didn't even plan it LOL. I didn't even intentionally plan to run 15 races - I thought I'd be much lower in 2015. Instead, I managed 3 marathons, 8 half marathons, 1 Ragnar, 1 17.75k, 1 10k, and 2 5ks. As I sit here and try to choose my favorites, all I can thing of is … [Read more...]

2015 in Pictures

2015 in Pictures

This is my favorite post that I write each year.  Not so much the actual writing of the post, but because I have so much fun re-reading many of the posts I wrote the rest of the year. It's always a good way to remember that I live a pretty awesome life and that my running life in particular is a ton of fun! One of these years I'll have a post about some PRs (even if it's just post 40 PRs), but this is not that year. This year I'm writing this as part of our Tuesdays on the Run Highlights of Running! I wrapped up 2014 by running one last race - the Jacksonville Half Marathon - rounding out the year with 17 half marathons. Then I took a nice little running break. January January kicked off with a return to regular running and the … [Read more...]

DFL > DNF > DNS > sitting on the couch

December 15, 2015 by MCM Mama 22 Comments

DFL > DNF > DNS > sitting on the couch

DFL: Dead F%^%ing Last DNF: Did Not Finish DNS: Did Not Start Pretty sure I don't need to explain "sitting on the couch. The topic today on Tuesdays on the Run is DNF or DNS. Have you done it? What were your reasons? Did you regret your choice? I'm not sure I agree with much of the title of this post, except that any of the acronyms is better than never trying. If you get off the couch and move, at whatever speed, for whatever distance, you are succeeding. As far as the other options go, there are always times that they are warranted. I've been nearly DFL twice at small races where only the fast kids did the longer distance. And I'm not one of the fast kids.   I've never DNF'd, but I've had two races … [Read more...]

Are you an Expo Junkie?

Are you an Expo Junkie?

It's Tuesday and of course that means it's Tuesdays on the Run! Today we want to know how you handle expo purchases. Are you strategic about when you arrive to avoid the crowds (or maybe to get first pick of a cool race branded item)? Do you just go when you have a chance and get in and out? Are you there to spend money or not interested in the items? Or are you one of those who has had their butt saved by an expo when something got left at home or lost by the airlines or the weather changed? Patty, Marcia, and I want to know! I live in the land of the big expo. Rock 'n' Roll DC, Army 10 Miler, and the Marine Corps Marathon all have lots of vendors and lots to look at. It's been a while since I've been to ATM, but both RNR and MCM … [Read more...]

TMITuesday at TOTR

December 1, 2015 by MCM Mama 5 Comments

TMITuesday at TOTR

Is there really TMI (too much information) when it comes to running? And you know that moms are totally willing to talk about topics that really are too much. (Not a mom or a runner? Trust me, hang out with either/both for any amount of time and you'll hear things that you can't unhear. Yep.) That's right, folks, today on Tuesdays on the Run, we are going where non runners fear to tread with TMI Tuesday. Join Patty, Marcia, and I as we lay it all out there for the world to see.   Have you ever played the game "Two truths and a lie?" You make three statements - two are true and one is a lie. The other players have to guess which is the lie. Shall we play? I once got completely naked in the open in a field at Ragnar … [Read more...]

Tuesdays on the Run Update

Tuesdays on the Run Update

I've been the slackiest of slackers lately. I've been trying desperately to catch up with all the things I let slide during marathon training while also trying to juggle birthdays, school activities, and Shoo's overwhelming soccer schedule. (I knew that travel soccer was a commitment, I just didn't add in all the driving into my planning.) Anyways, I've been a bad hostess. A very bad hostess. It's like I invited you over for dinner and offered you last night's leftovers. Thankfully Marcia and Patty are more organized than I am. They actually wrote about today's topic: Runner Playlists. Since my playlist is older than a lot of you, and hasn't been updated in YEARS, I decided I'd talk a bit more about our linkup. I'm trying to be a … [Read more...]

Celebrate good times, come on!

November 9, 2015 by MCM Mama 16 Comments

Celebrate good times, come on!

Earworm? Maybe? Today's topic brought all sorts of songs to mind. And now this one is stuck in my head! (So, of course, I needed to share it with you all...) Today at Tuesdays on the Run, we want to know how you celebrate after a race. Are you one who hangs around the finish festival drinking a beer or listening to music? Or are you one who beats feet out of there as soon as you cross the finish line? And if you don't party at the finish, what do you do to celebrate a race? I'm one who pretty much always leaves a race immediately, but there's one combination that will keep me there: good beer and good company. Otherwise, I'm much more inclined to head home or head towards a better beer option. … [Read more...]

Packing for a destination race AKA racecation

Packing for a destination race AKA racecation

You know I like to make races part of my vacations. Heck, I like to make races the actual vacation. LOL. Luckily, Beer Geek loves to travel so he's joined me for several Mainly Marathon series: Dust Bowl, Riverboat, and Center of the Nation. He's also gone with me to Cape Cod (where he looked at light houses while I ran Ragnar Cape Cod) as well as multiple vacations that included races, including trips to Washington, Oregon, Utah, Alaska, and Wyoming.  So, packing for a destination race or racecation? Yeah, I got that. Here are the most important tips I can give you: ALWAYS take your running shoes in your carry on. ALWAYS. - I've never actually had my luggage lost on a racecation, but the times I have had lost luggage it's … [Read more...]

Tips for Night Races (and a few thoughts from MCM)

October 26, 2015 by MCM Mama 25 Comments

Tips for Night Races (and a few thoughts from MCM)

I have to admit, I'm still riding a bit high from finishing the Marine Corps Marathon. I was pretty sure I could do it, but I had enough doubt in my mind that I carried enough cash for a cab and also had my metro card. Yes, I believe in being prepared. Know what else is a amazing? By Monday morning, I was barely sore. Seriously. I did five loads of laundry (2 flights of stairs between the hamper and the washer), went grocery shopping (where someone did not believe I'd run a marathon because I was walking normally LOL), and took Shoo to the doctor (where we went up and down multiple flights of stairs.) Feeling fine really blew my plan of spending the day sitting on the couch eating bon bons. Anyways, MCM was such an awesome experience … [Read more...]

Inspiring Others to Run

October 20, 2015 by MCM Mama 13 Comments

Inspiring Others to Run

I think I may still be a bit tired from my Runner's World weekend. Why do I think that? Because when I thought about the topic, "Inspiring others to run", Chicago and their song "You're the Inspiration" immediately jumped to mind.  You can thank me now for not including a video. I'm sure that Marcia and Patty did not have that song in mind when we came up with the topic LOL. I didn't start running in order to inspire people. In fact, I don't generally think of myself as particularly inspiring. I'm just a slow mother runner, who likes to do stupid crazy fun things. (As an aside, I had a conversation with a friend last night about other runner friends. She mentioned a friend who just ran 3 marathons in 3 weeks, and another friend who … [Read more...]
