Another month gone, another month where my running has been sporadic.
Today is the last day of the month and our Tuesdays on the Run tradition for the last day is to rate our month. I’d kind of like to give my month a big fat F. But, honestly, that would be me just being pissed at running. Most of my life has actually been going well. So let’s chat…
Let’s start with the good…
Running
I ran my 76th half marathon and my 2nd international half marathon on the very first day of the month. It was not a great race for a lot of reasons, but I finished and I could still walk the next day. Definitely an A.
I started training for my 5th Marine Corps Marathon. I’m a good bit behind on distance and don’t plan to catch up, but I’m rocking the hot weather running. At least that’s going well. A.
The remainder of my running has been “meh”. My foot only wants to run a few days a week. It doesn’t hurt while I’m running, but I struggle with some tenderness for the next 24 hours. I’m gonna call that a C-.
FWTFL
I’m still rocking the weights and the eating plan. I fell a bit off the wagon while we were traveling – it’s hard to do IF when your body can’t figure out what time it is. But I managed to keep my weight stable and I’ve jumped back into the weight lifting. I’m bummed I can’t run more, but my muscles are strong and my mood is mostly stable, so win! A+.
Balancing Life
I’m managing to keep all of the balls in the air, most of the time. I’ve unexpectedly had to help my son a lot more than planned with his summer school class. Thankfully it’s a topic I actually know a lot about, so having to explain things that weren’t clear in the materials was actually easy for me. Quality time with my teen + he aced the test = A+.
Unfortunately, between summer school, my two jobs, working out, and running the household, my time is pretty accounted for, so my younger son has spent more time than desired on Fortnite. I hate how that game has sucked in him and all of his friends, but the project I planned for us this summer (painting the garage) has been impossible due to all of the rain we’ve been getting. C for this one. Thank goodness he has another camp coming up.
Overall
I’m going to give July a solid B. It started off amazing with our trip to Australia, but has been a little crazy and at the same time, a little boring since we got home. August should be better with a trip to Wisconsin (including a visit to the ZOOMA Great Lakes location and our annual beer festival). One kid will be in sleep away camp and the other will be done with summer school, so fun should be had by all.
Now if I could just convince my foot that running 5 days a week is where it’s at… (Heck, I’d settle for 4 quality runs and another double digit run soon.)
How was your July? Are you a big fan of summer or does it throw you off schedule like it does me every year?
And a little birdie told me that ZOOMA is having a flash sale tomorrow. Check out their social media for details.

Summer is a fun time of year but it definitely throws off my schedule! I find that its hard to get things done and it just goes by so quickly. It sounds like overall you had a pretty good month- I hope your foot cooperates so you can get more runs in!
Sounds like you’re doing really well. There is no such thing as perfect!
Since I don’t have kids, summer is pretty much the same as every season. Except hotter. But at least you don’t have to shovel rain — although it does make hiking a lot more difficult!
Your july actually sounds pretty good- sorry its not meeting your expectations. And ugh to not getting the garage painted due to rain- perhaps this month? Good luck getting in some runs!
my schedule was totally off this month too, but I think in a good way. Sometimes it helps to take a break.
I always embrace summer and being off the school schedule. But by the time August rolls around, I’m wanting that schedule back. We had no camp or summer school this year and one might say the kids and their friends got in my hair a bit.
Running has been tough for me this summer–but with cooler temps came better miles. I think the heat has a lot to do with my struggles. Hopefully for you too.
Flash sale did you say? Can you share the deets so I can share them?
Summer throws me off every year! While I enjoy the downtime with family, I can’t seem to find a rhythm. Sounds like you had a good month – hope the running is better for you in August!
I’d think after being in Australia, a lot of things “back home” would seem boring LOL (at least in my setting). Good luck with MCM training…wish I was headed to that venue (maybe in 2019?).
I struggle sometimes because it is so darn HOT and humid! I hope the frustration with your foot comes to an end soon.
Wow, you are swamped!! I definitely remember those days when my girls were younger! I’m still busy now but it’s a different kind of busy and still I’m struggling to get all the things done. haha. I guess that’s just life, huh?
I’m sorry you have been struggling so much with your foot! Have you seen your doctor about the pain? It’s interesting that it doesn’t bother you while you’re running….
Ugh, Fortnite! As a middle school teacher that is my nemesis!
Sounds like you did a good job with balancing life and running. I’ve definitely let running slip this summer!
Summer’s been busy, and I finally have my big trip coming up in a couple weeks. I have plans to try to be healthy, and I know I will splurge too. That’s what vacations are for.
I am over summer running! I have a calf thing going on that only bothers me when I am running. Ugh hoping to figure that out soon
I’m the opposite – I can run fine, but then I limp for 24 hours…
Coming back from vacation is hard! I definitely had some post-vacation blues when I came back from my Italy trip this month, and similar to your month, it’s felt both hectic and boring at the same time. Hoping for a nicer August!
Also training for MCM and also not getting the long runs in as I would like. I feel your pain! I have an August marathon too before MCM. Ugh! So disappointed injuries have prevented me from doing the training I would like.
I’ve just accepted that my longest run will likely be around 16 miles and I’ll just be running MCM to have fun.
Wow, July has been busy for you. That sucks about your foot. I hope it isn’t too serious.
For me July went by in the blink of an eye – I can’t believe that it’s already August!
I don’t have children so my schedule stays pretty consistent in the summer but i find it harder to get outside for runs.
I think you had a fantastic month! I hope your foot gets better so that you can increase your mileage, but overall things seem to be going well!
I didn’t get a single mile in this month, PF, sigh…hoping things turn around this month with physical therapy!
