It’s Monday, mmmm, Monday. ย Hmm, that doesn’t quite have the same feel as “It’s Friday, frfrfr, Friday” does…
We have a busy, but fun weekend this weekend.
On Saturday, Beer Geek wanted to try out something new to us – duckpin bowling. What, you ask, is duckpin bowling? Well, it’s bowling with small balls (3.5-5 pounds) and smaller pins. While it looks a lot like regular bowling, the different weight and sizes make the pins act differently. And I’ll be the first to admit that we kept the bumpers up for the whole time we bowled. It would have been a depressing game otherwise LOL.
I also found that I actually had a preference of which ball to use, even though they all looked basically the same. Certain balls just seemed to slip out of my small hand in a bad way.
After bowling, we headed to a brewpub we had not visited before – Denizen’s Brewing.
I really enjoyed their Sex Panther, a black lager, and Beer Geek liked their sour beer, Oud Boy. If you are a fan of IPAs, they had several of those on tap. In addition to good beer, I had an amazing chicken curry sandwich and Shoo had some of the best fries I’ve ever tasted.
Sunday morning Beer Geek and I were signed up to run the Love the Run You’re With 5K. I slept so poorly, you’d think I was running a marathon! Anyways, I got up earlier than planned after a night spent waking every hour. Really? I was that anxious over a local 5K? Sheesh!
It was supposed to be a lovely day, but instead we got grey and just a little drizzly.ย I had the hardest time figuring out what to wear and ended up slightly over dressed, but I survived.
But you know what almost killed me???
I FORGOT MY GARMIN!!!!
I haven’t raced a 5K in years and I didn’t have my Garmin to help me. I came up with a brilliant plan – run as hard as I could without puking. I was successful for the most part: 9:33 (wicked uphill), 8:58, 8:59. I didn’t feel like had much left in me at the end. 28:26 is far from a PR for me, but at least I know where I am fitness wise right now. (My PR is 24:58, my PR for this course is 27:15) Bonus: I did not puke and was able to smile for the camera.
After the race, I headed to a friend’s house for a Ragnar Info session. Let me tell you, talking about Ragnar Relay with a bunch of interested ladies is not a hardship. Hopefully I helped convince them to run. Fun way to spend the afternoon!
Finally, to round out the weekend, Shoo and I spent a couple of hours at a friend’s house. I love it when I become friends with the parents of my kids’ friends. It’s a lot more enjoyable to hang out when the kid also has someone to talk to. ย That, plus Thai food delivery, rounded out our weekend quite nicely.
This week is going to be busy – we have something every night this week, plus half of one of our bathrooms is getting ripped out and replaced. There’s very little I hate more than home renovation. So, if you notice I’m running a bit more mileage this week, now you know why.
Don’t forget to join us tomorrow for Tuesdays on the Run! Since it’s Valentine’s Day, our topic is ย “What do you love about running?” Tell us all about your running love affair.
I’m linking up with Tricia and Holly for Weekly Wrap. Stop by and check out what everyone else is up to.
DUCKPINS ARE MY FAAAAVE!!!
And I watched you post and talk about the run yesterday as well.
It still surprises me how shorter is so often harder—yet I hear that from runnerfriends all the tame.
SHORT? LONG? ALL HARD HERE ๐
My best friend and her boyfriend are huge duck pin fans and are on leagues LOL I had never heard of it before she started dating him. ๐ They love it! Plus since they live in Silver Spring I bet they play at the same place you played ๐
Small world ๐
I shared your post with her and that is the same place they play ๐
I’ve never heard of duckpin bowling…sounds fun! My boyfriend and I love going bowling and found a dive place near our home where we have a good time.
Congrats on your race! 5K’s are scary for me…I get too scared to look at my watch!
The Denizen place looks like a great spot. I enjoy trying out new beers.
I’m sitting here laughing at your approach to the 5k. I forgot my Garmin for the 2015 Fit Foodie 5k and was devastated and also had to run based on feel. It wasn’t a great race, but oh well. There will be other races.
I haven’t run a 5k in years, so I know I’d be nervous! Great job! And not puking is a win in my book.
I’ve never heard of duckpin bowling! How neat! Congrats on your 5k! Yes I get nervous and usually don’t sleep well the night before any distance race! That was a great time for your 5k!!
Congrats on your 5k. Your time is fast in my book.
I like to run 5ks. They’re over fast and it’s a painless way to get in a speed workout.
Great job on the 5K and without a GARMIN! Wow – I like your plan though ๐ I too am a beer geek. I LOVE a good craft brew and I’ve lost count but my husband and I have been to most likely 100 breweries. We love a good beer. Heading to CO again in May to get my fill. I’m a white IPA fan.
Duck pin bowling is so fun! I did it at a wedding last summer :). And hooray for tech-free runs. They’re very freeing!
We had something similar in Boston when I was in high school in college, and then they closed ๐ It was tough going back to visit to see all the stuff I knew is gone.
Hmmmm, duckpin bowling? I’ve done the traditional bowling (was even on a day league years ago when the kids were little, because they had a daycare room), but never duckpin bowling. I assume it’s scored the same way? Looks like fun!
Haha, that’s usually how I run, too. Run as fast as you can without puking seems like a gold standard for 5Ks. ๐
Duckpin bowling sounds fun!
I am an awful bowler, but maybe I could take on duckpin!
Awesome job on your race! Any time you finish without puking is a win in my book!
Hope the bathroom reno goes great!
Congrats on your race! I dont know how I would do in a 5k without a Garmin. I would either start out way too fast or way too slow!
Nice job on the 5k. Sometimes running without a watch is surprising. 5k’s are usually not my favorite I tend to start too fast.
This is the first time I’ve heard of duck pin bowling – how interesting! Sorry about the Garmin! We rely so much on our trackers, it’s heartbreaking when we forget them especially during a race. Congrats!
OK, where is Denizens? I love IPAs and fries! I couldn’t make the Ragnar meeting b/c I was working out emptying out our kitchen for the demo later this week. I’ll join you in house renovation commiserating! Congrats on the 5K – you did great considering the lack of sleep and lack of Garmin!
Congrats on a great race! I hate home renovation, too. I’ve been there, done that…never again. ๐
Great job on your 5k. I would have been upset if I forgot my Garmin! We’ve been trying to get bowling as our bowling alley has been sold and not going to run anymore. Sad, really.
OMG. Not having my Garmin would have been a struggle. GREAT JOB on those splits! My husband is an excellent bowler with awards and everything (I’m not). I’ve never heard of Duckpin Bowling but it sounds like fun. Maybe I would be more competitive doing that. You wouldn’t have to do much talking to convince me to run a Ragnar Relay. That is on my bucket list. Thanks for linking, Erika!
Duckpin bowling? That is a new one- sounds like fun! I love your race plan, run without puking, isn’t that how we are supposed to run a 5K? Sounds like a great weekend all the way around!
