The first time I ran (almost) 5 miles, I didn’t realize I was running that far. It was my first race ever – an 8k – and I’d failed at the math. Who knew that 8k was 4.97? I thought it was just over four and had trained for that.
Yesterday I ran 5 miles for the first time since June 2 as part of Laura’s “5 and 10” series where you are supposed to run either 5 or 10 miles by the 5th of the month. With 2 marathons and 15+ (can’t remember, too lazy to check) half marathons under my belt, you’d think 5 miles would be no big deal.
But it was.
Slowing my pace down and finishing 5 miles with the knowledge that I still had some gas in the tank was huge for me yesterday. I needed that confidence builder. I won’t be ready to run a half marathon tomorrow (although I’m sure I could finish one), but I will be ready by mid-October when my first race comes along.
Now, if someone could find my speed and send it back to me, I’d appreciate that.
Happy Friday!
One day at a time… 🙂 Happy mileage!
Hi, I just found your blog. I’m so glad I came across it and read your About me page. I have 2 young children (27 months and 8 months) and just started running in an attempt to overcome PPD. Feeling pretty good so far!
I’m doing the 5 and 10 series too! Did 5 as well. Your 8k story made me laugh 🙂
Eh. Speed is overrated. 😉
First the distance and then then the speed. You can’t be greedy and have it all at once.
If you find your speed will you look for mine? Ultra training seems to have caused me to lose it. Keep at it. You’ll get there.
You have inspired me to run. It has been too long that I have, but am ready to get back to it! Thank you.
I’m doing the virtual runs too. I haven’t run over 4 miles since April (ankle problems). For whatever reason, it intimidated me, but I finished. And you’re right, it was definitely a confidence builder!
Nice job getting out there- you’ll build it back up, I’m sure!!
It’s amazing the different perspective you can have on the same mileage. 5 miles seems like a lot the first time or when you haven’t done it awhile but when you are in the middle of marathon training it just seems like a short little run. That’s great that you were able to finish with some energy left! It’s a fun virtual series. I’m doing it too and ran 5 as well this month.
