The kids and I are on our annual vacation in Wisconsin. Ever since Jones joined us 14 years ago, I’ve spent part of the summer at my parents’ house. In fact, when both boys were really young, I’d bring them home for a two week trip in the beginning and another trip at the end of the summer. Now that they are older and we have more going on, we only make one trip, but we still make it.
Obviously the main reason we visit is seeing my family – a large percentage of my extended family lives within a few hours of my parents’ hometown. But I also come for the food. And I don’t mean the State Fair food. (This year they are deep frying fruit and olives. No, I’m not kidding.)
Nope, I’m here for the yummy summer produce. I’ve only been here for 24 hours and I’ve already eaten my weight in veggies…
- Tomatoes – There’s something special about homegrown Wisconsin tomatoes. They taste better than any tomatoes I’ve tasted anywhere else. And my mom and aunts always grow enough to feed an army. I’ve been known to eat so many I end up sick to my stomach…
- Cucumbers – I don’t actually even love cucumbers, except in the summer at my mom’s. Every meal includes a cucumber salad (my favorite is literally just cucumber, onion, salt, and dill). I will literally eat an entire serving bowl by myself.
- Kohlrabi – This can also be eaten raw, but my favorite way to eat it is to slice it thin and saute it in coconut oil.
- Sweet Corn on the cob – Tonight we had sweet corn for dinner that was picked by friends of my parents’ yesterday. You can’t get much fresher than that unless you pick yourself. I don’t even use salt or butter. It tastes so good just straight up.
- Homemade salsa – my parents grow tomatoes, onions and peppers. What better way to eat them than to put them all together?
Don’t worry though, my trip isn’t all about eating vegetables. Wisconsin is also known for amazing brats and really good craft beer. Both of those are on my eating agenda for Saturday…
Fresh-picked produce is the best – and it tastes even better on vacation!
All the corn is so good right now I can’t get enough! Have a fun vacation
I didn’t know you were from Wisconsin! I’m sorry you only get to visit there once a year. I do not eat deep fried food but I was at a picnic this summer and they were deep frying pickles and green tomatoes. I did not try a pickle but I did try the deep fried tomato with the dipping sauce and it was really yummy! Enjoy the rest of your visit!
Have fun at home – hope the weather there is better than here. It’s AWFUL!
There’s nothing better than garden tomatoes! But as far as Wisconsin goes, what about cheese curds and New Glarus beer?
You can eat kohlrabi raw?! I had no idea. Except in slaw. That I knew. But I’ve always only ever roasted it. Hmm.
I could seriously live on corn on the cob – OMG! sometimes I’ll have it for a snack (not even kidding)
I love fresh veggies and those look amazing. I really need to get some fresh corn on the cob before the season is out. I’m hungry now!
