Mainly Marathons Appalachian Series – South Carolina

What I wore: hat, tank top, long sleeve quarter zip, capris, and Altra Rivera
Location: Seneca, SC (State #41!)
Let’s just start out with the truth – this race was the hardest of the races and pretty much sucked. I chose to do the early start again because if I didn’t there would be no shower at the end. As it turns out, it was a good thing. It was chillier than the previous races and I had some chafing from my skirt from the previous day, so I wore capris instead of a skirt. Upon arrival at the start, we were told that the course was shortened due to construction. On a “loop” course, that just means that you’ll be running more laps. But the bad news was that the part of the course that was chopped off was the flat part. Yep, more laps with more hills. Yay?
This was definitely a rough race for me. I was tired and the hills meant you were pretty much going up or going down. My legs were not excited. I set a goal of finishing in under 3 hours and I did it, but there was a LOT of walking. (So much, that at one point, I told Beer Geek to head back to the hotel to shower and come back because he had plenty of time…)
The good:
- I just needed to finish. That’s all that was good…
The bad:
- The never ending hills.
- You could see the finish line from the farthest end of the course, but then you had to go all the way back around.
The ugly:
- Did I mention the hills???
Would I run this race again?
There’s always one course in each series that I don’t enjoy. This was that course. I’d probably do it again without the construction, but honestly it was an ugly, hilly course, so I would not do it again unless I had some compelling reason (like doing the whole series or something like that.)
