Madison Mini Half Marathon
August 12, 2023
What I wore: hat, tank top, Skirt Sports Lotta Breeze skirt, and Altra Vanish
Weather: 65* with 90% humidity
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Confession: I signed up for this race on a total whim (and convinced Beer Geek to run it too.) I’d run it several years ago, but it had been a while since it hit on the right weekend. And by right weekend, I mean Great Taste of the Midwest. For those of you unfamiliar with my love of craft beer, I will just say that GTMW is the best of the best when it comes to beer festivals. Lots of great breweries, unlimited samples, and a reasonable number of attendees, so you can actually not stand in any lines to get beer. The event starts at 1pm on Saturday afternoon, so why not run a half marathon on Sunday morning?
We rolled into town on Friday morning and hit up a brewpub for lunch and then packet pick up for the race. We were in and out in just a few minutes, so we headed back downtown to meet up with friends for the pre-GTMW beer events. We walked to a number of brew pubs and then joined our friends for a group dinner at a restaurant that offered craft beers. I mean, who wouldn’t spend an afternoon walking and drinking beer and then plan to run a half marathon???
Saturday morning, dawned a bit humid (90%, ugh!) and warm. I will admit that I looked at the route and found a potential bail out point – at mile 9, the course ran a few blocks from our hotel. We walked over to the start and I planned to just take it easy and do run/walk the whole way. But, as we all know, running easy at the beginning of a race is not my strong suit…
I actually had a surprisingly good race – I ran strong without walking until mile 8, when I had to take an emergency pit. After that stop, I couldn’t quite get my rhythm back, but I managed to run more than I walked, at least until the awful hill near the end. But my goal of finishing under 2:45 was fully met with a 2:37:59 finish!
- It had been over a year since I’d run a half marathon, so it was good to get back out there.
- The race was well organized and I enjoyed the Arboretum miles.
- I ran into a friend at the start who I hadn’t seen since pre-pandemic.
- The humidity was AWFUL.
- I was undertrained for the race, but that seems to be my theme these days.
- The pit stop at mile 8. I’m just thankful there were no lines…
Would I run this race again?
Absolutely. I plan to run it again in 2024 if it’s the right weekend. Beer Geek, on the other hand, says he’s done – he found the hill at the end highly insulting LOL.
