The heat here lately has been sucking all of my motivation to run long or run fast. I’ve been all about the short runs at a 10+ minute pace. Knowing today was going to be 78 degrees at 6:30 am and 80 degrees at 8:00 am, I wasn’t particularly motivated to get up and out early. It was going to suck either way. Knowing I only needed 6 miles to hit my 20 for the week and knowing that I had two days to get the miles in didn’t particularly motivate me either.
I finally headed out at around 8:15, knowing I needed to be back by a few minutes to 9, I planned 3 easy miles. Mile 1 – 9:29 and it didn’t suck. Hmm, mile 2 – 9:36 and it still felt pretty good. Mile 3 – 9:21, ok, that felt a little too fast. Mile 4 – 9:42. Crap, I’m feeling great, but I have to get home. Isn’t that how it always happens?
I got home and Beer Geek headed out, so I hit the treadmill for another 3 miles (1.3 barefoot). My average pace for the 7 miles was about 9:40 and I could have definitely kept going if the natives hadn’t gotten restless.
You know it’s been hot for a while when an 80 degree run feels “pleasant”. And I know I’ve been whining a lot about the weather, but it’s been unusually hot this June. Usually the average high is 85 in June and so far this month only 5 days have been below 85. 14 days have been about 90 and we’ve hit 100 once already.
sounds ilke you're getting used to the heat!
I agree w/ Bethany and Ryan–you are getting acclimated! See, summer's not so bad!
Good for you! It's been slowly warming up here, but I don't think I could keep up the pace in heat like that!
I know what you mean about the "ugh I have to run in the heat feeling."Yesterday I ran 7 on the treadmill..and wow it seemed a million times easier than running 3 miles around the neighborhood in the heat. I hope I start to feel acclimated soon :-/
Nice job getting used to the heat! I am still not there yet. Beats ice and snow!
I couldn't agree more about the heat — I would rather run in minus 20C than plus 20C. Sounds like it's not slowing you down now though. Inspiring!
I think the fact that we go out and run in the weather – no matter how bad it is – gives us the moral right to complain about it. Complain away!
Nice run! It does always seem to happen that once you finally have the mojo, outside forces try to just suck it right away. 🙂
I went out at 8:15 today as well and the "feels like" temp here was 97. I did 3 miles and each one of them sucked!Nice job on your 7!
Just think of what you'll pull off mid summer, when the heat waves start!
You're going to be so tough by the time fall rolls around – I'm impressed!
That's always how it happens. Sounds like you might be getting more used to running in the heat even though it's not the most fun.
I would not handle that heat at all. But its good that you are acclimatizing.
I know what you mean about the heat…yuck! I have been having a hard time making it through my runs without taking walk breaks. I am so impressed that you are keeping up such a great pace:) Nice work!
Great job! That is HOT!!!!
yesterday morning felt like sweet relief until at least 9am, so it sounds like you timed it perfectly!!
Welcome to running in Texas! Although here – it's not the heat that gets you – it's the humidity.Great run!
Great job on that run – you're getting used to it for certain! LOL
You're getting acclimated no problem!I'm kinda glad I'm not running in that sauna out there.
1.3 miles barefoot? Interesting. That really is sweeping the nation!
Ugh! I'm with you – get ready because many of my posts are going to include whining about the heat! I'll provide the whine you bring the cheese!
