My water solution

January 7, 2012 by MCM Mama 10 Comments

I’m not great about drinking water in general, but I am really horrible about it in the winter.   I get in the habit of only drinking coffee during the day and then a glass of nuun with meals or workouts.  (I love nuun and would drink it all the time, but I don’t think I need that many electrolytes, plus the stuff is not cheap.)  I think I’ve been kind of dehydrated for the last few months.

I’ve tried all the suggestions:

  • Carrying a water bottle with me all the time
  • Filling all the bottles I’m supposed to drink at the beginning of the day
  • “Rules” about having to drink before I eat or every time I walk through a room

None of them stuck for more than a few hours a day.

Finally, I’ve found something that is working for me and has worked for 5 days so far.

Meet my Dr. Seuss glass!

I actually have 6 of the Welch’s jelly jar glasses that I’ve had forever and the boys used to use at meals (they’ve graduated to bigger amounts to drink at meals.)   For the last five days, I pull out a fresh glass in the morning and fill it with cold water.  I keep it on the kitchen counter and every time I walk through, I take a swig.  Since my kitchen is between my main level and the basement stairs, I walk through a lot.  The big difference between this and other items I’ve tried is that it’s only 8 ounces.  The water stays cold.  And if I feel I’ve not been drinking enough, it doesn’t take much to knock back a whole glass.  (I knew that my beer chugging skills would come in handy some day LOL).

So, that’s my tip of the day and how I’m finally managing to stay hydrated.  How do you get your H2O in?

I do not drink a lot of water either. And I know I should do better. At work, I am scared to use the water fountain because the kids (pre-k kiddos) use those fountains and gosh! They are nasty! So I refuse to use their water fountains. I usually buy a liter bottle of flavored water and drink it. With that, I don't need it to stay cold (because room-temperature water is just plain yucky!)

It's true about remembering to drink. I'm really good during the week at work, cause I take a large water bottle and have it on my desk. But weekends (being home) is different. Good tip! Now to find a fun glass of my own.

Great idea. I actually drink tons of water, just b/c I am always, always thirsty. I know I do too much, actually–I always pee completely clear. There must be some middle ground!

Hey, whatever works!! I feel so much better when drinking enough (ahem, water) but I've really been slacking on that lately and I'm noticing. Need to load up my bottles again…

It's good that you've found something. I'm a water bottle carrier and that works for me.

Nice job! I struggle with water intake also. I keep a large glass on the kitchen counter and every time I go in there I try to drink at least half of it.

I'm horrible about drinking water, especially in the winter. Recently I got one of those Brita water bottles – if you drink 3 a day you've hit the 8-10 glasses goal. I carry it with me everywhere and so far it seems to be working.

Great idea.I do like water so don't have trouble getting it in but I find in the cooler months, I tend to drink a lot of tea and herbal tea during the day so less plain water.

I love the nuun, too. I break the tabs up and really dilute it so it's just a hint of flavor. For work I have a brita bottle like they have on the Biggest Loser. I try to drink two while I'm at school and another one on the way home. I wish coffee was more hydrating! I drink plenty of it!!
