Remember Snowzilla? More than 23 inches in one weekend.
Yeah, that was a lot of fun. But you know what was even worse? That one inch of snow that brought DC to a standstill. It took us 2 hours to drive 5 miles home from running.
Unfortunately, that kind of snow traffic jam is not unusual around here. And I don’t think that winter is done with us yet. In past years, we’ve had some big snows in February and even early March. And let’s not talk about how often we get just an inch or two and everything slows down. In years past, this has not been a problem for me as I rarely drove more than a couple of miles from home in the evenings (and really even that didn’t happen often.) I’m a real homebody in the winter.
But this year is different. Shoo has soccer practice two nights a week 8 miles from home. In Washington DC snow traffic, that translate to at least a 3 hour drive. So, I’m doing my best to make sure I know when it’s going to snow. I recently added the new SnowCast app to my iPhone. It tells you if you have any snow expected in the next 6 hours and total snow expectations for up to 48! Guess who won’t be caught away from home in the snow again. This girl. This girl right here.
Monday night, it looked like this.
I was happy to be sitting at home not worrying about my commute because I checked before I headed anywhere. Now if I could just get it to tell me whether or not my kids will have school. Maybe the decision makers need this…

There really is an app for everything! Does it send you notifications if a spontaneous snowstorm pops up?
Why does 1 inch of snow cause traffic jams?
I have not heard of snow cast it looks similar to darksky that I use in the summer to track thunder storms. Our weather has been less than desirable lately!
Grrr…I have an Android so I can’t use the app. It sounds great! I know you guys really struggle with the snow in DC. I’m hoping you won’t have to use that app much longer!
Oh that’s so neat! My boyfriend could really use this for his commute.
This looks awesome! It seems to snow constantly at my new house, lol. I’m always looking for the best break in the snow to get to the grocery store.
This is good to know about! Last week someone told me we were supposed to get an inch of snow up here in MA. I didn’t check the forecast until the following morning and found out we were getting about 8, haha. I probably need to be more aware of the upcoming weather!
Oh my goodness, 3 hours to go 8 miles??? I had to scroll up to make sure I read that correctly. That is crazy!
