Yesterday was the sign up for the Army 10 Miler. Judging by my Facebook feed, it was an absolute nightmare to sign up AND it sold out in a record amount of time.
I didn’t sign up. In fact, my conversation with Beer Geek went something like this:
Me: You should be proud of me. I didn’t sign up for the Army 10 Miler this year.
Him: Why would you? It’s not a half marathon.
Beer Geek clearly doesn’t buy into “mob mentality”.
I’ve run the Army 10 Miler 3 times. In fact, it was my first long race. (I remember it clearly – I ran the race and then we had Jones’ birthday party at our house with 20+ kids that afternoon. I could barely walk.)
The first time I ran it because I wanted to.
The second time I ran it because I wanted to beat 1:30:00 (missed it by 49 seconds).
The third time I ran it because my dad wanted to run it.
The fourth time I didn’t run it but I got caught up in the excitement on registration day and registered. (Do you have a race you run because “everyone” you know is doing it??)
After all, “EVERYONE” else was doing it, I should do it too.
Somehow, I found some self control yesterday and didn’t sign up. But it made me realize that my fall is wide open. WIDE OPEN.
I’m running Ragnar in September and a race with Mainly Marathons in October (what? Only 1?), but that’s it! While part of me is happy (this spring has been a challenge), I’m feeling a bit lost.
I need a GOAL race for the fall. Here’s where you come in: tell me your favorite fall race within 6 hours of DC. Half marathon distance is preferred, but I’d love to hear about any beer related races in your neck of the woods!
And, Go!
The akron half/full marathon…well because its in Ohio and you need Ohio…right?
Yes, I do need Ohio. I’ll have to go take a look…
I haven’t done it yet but I’m signed up for the Richmond half marathon in November. I’ve heard great things about that race from multiple people so that might be an option. I’ve also read from multiple people about the Rock and Roll Virginia Beach race and that sounds like a fun one too. I definitely have race envy when I hear about everyone signing up for all these fun races but I’ve got to keep my goals and budget in mind!
Richmond is awesome! You will love it. It’s on my maybe list for fall. I hear you on keeping the budget in mind. I think I blew all of this year’s budget and most of next year’s on the races this spring LOL.
Columbus,OH 1/2 and full marathon in October is a great race with a flat course. In September the Akron 1/2 or full is a hilly, challenging course that is very well organized, fun, and has excellent swag.
Hmm, another Ohio option. Guess I need to check weekends.
How did you find your Ragnar team? I’m dying to do one, but am not sure of how to find a team!
Mine was formed from my Moms Run This Town group. I think there is someplace (facebook maybe) that you can find teams that are looking for runners.
Is St. Louis 6 hours from you? Doing RNR St. Louis this October.
I think it’s a bit farther than that. I need to look at my calendar…
What about the Air Force Half Marathon in September or the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half (we have a discount for that one)?!
Sadly AF is the weekend of Ragnar and I’m probably working WWB…
Here are a few to consider:
October-Atlantic City Half, NJ ( I haven’t done this particular one, but I run a similar one in April)
November- Trenton Double Cross, NJ ( probably running this this year)
November- Philadelphia Half ( personal favorite )
SIX HOURS FLIGHT??
come here 😉
I used to be that way about Broad Street but 30,000 people put me over the edge and I stopped running it. (Now it is 40,000 runners!)
I am also that way about Philly Marathon. Last year was the first time in 6 years I didn’t show up to that start line. But I will be back this year!
I’m running the Smuttynose Rockfest Half in NH in October – beer’s involved 😉 Also doing the Philly half in November – this will be my 2nd time – love this race!
I have heard great things about the Newport Half and the Hartford Half – both in October.
Hah! The ATM is that race for me too. It’s the race I love to hate. Although I hate the Lawyers Have Heart more and I do that one every year too. This year is my 7th ATM so I qualified for the early entry a few weeks ago — even that sold out quickly. There’s the Wilson Bridge Half.
I was proud of myself for just saying no to the ATM. If I signed up for it, I’d be bitching about it all fall.
