It’s hot here right now. OK, let me rephrase that. It feels like the surface of the sun here. I’ve never hidden my dislike of Virginia summers. And yet, it seems like every summer I find myself on a training plan that requires lots and lots of miles. Will I never learn?
I live in an awesome place to run. You can run by the monuments, you can run out to Mount Vernon on a trail, you can run the (apparently very shady) Capital Crescent Trail. My run could look like this:
Or this:
Or this:
But unfortunately, mostly it’s looked like this:
But that’s ok, I’m catching up on my movies and books and I’m getting the miles in. And someday it won’t be so hot that I feel like my brain is melting…
Also, here are the topics for the next few weeks. I’ve apparently decided to be a slacker this summer, so I totally didn’t realize we were out of topics…
Tuedays on the Run topics for August:
8/2: Olympics. What running events will you watch? Who are you rooting for?
8/9: Running/Race Day Mishaps. Ever have a race go wrong? Forget something? Tell us!
8/16: Race photobombs. Share yours!
8/23: Race memorabilia (bibs, medals, heat sheets, etc) what do you display? Toss? Donate?
8/29: Your fall race calendar

Virginia is an amazing place to be during the summer… until it tips the scales into can’t breathe because of heat and humidity status. I don’t blame you for heading inside!
Don’t you just hate wasting the summer days inside on a treadmill? But hey, ya do what ya gotta do right? No fun running outside when you can’t even catch your breath!
I ran on the Mt. Vernon trail once and loved it! I need to go back! This heat has really been awful. I’m annoyed that this morning would have been perfect weather to run, but now I’m thinking that I need to keep torturing myself outdoors to get acclimated!

We don’t get as hot & humid as you, but it’s still been abnormally hot & humid here. Normally I’d still be outside running early, but Bandit has made that more difficult so I’m on the treadmill a lot more this summer.
You are so lucky to live in an area with such beautiful trails! We have some nice ones, but they’re a fair drive away, so usually it’s a time constraint and I don’t get out to them.

I heard you can run through the DC Zoo since it’s free? I’ll have to check that out when I’m there for a conference in a couple weeks. If not, hotel treadmill it is. I don’t know the area and my #1 priority is safety.

I remember the DC summers very well and I don’t blame you for taking things inside. I hope you guys get some relief soon!

In your heat and humidity, I’d be on the treadmill too. If I had a treadmill at home, I’d definitely find it hard to drag myself out in the heat in the summer. Movies and air conditioning do a lot to ameliorate the monotony of the treadmill. 🙂
