Yes, it really just let out here (actually my middle schooler has a half day today). Yet, somehow I feel like we’ve been fulfilling our summer plans for a few weeks already. And since today’s topic for Tuesdays on the Run is “summer plans”, this post will be somewhat retrospective as well as looking to the future.
A vacation with Beer Geek in Denver – this trip is already in our rear view mirror. Beer Geek and I hiked all around Denver – hitting Breckenridge, Aspen, Steamboat Springs, Colorado Springs, and Laramie, WY. We hit Pike’s Peak, drank at innumerable brewpubs, and survived a crazy hail storm. All in all, it was an amazing vacation together to celebrate 23 years of marriage.
Skirt Sports retreat – I had been looking forward to this retreat from the minute the retreat ended two years ago. It did not disappoint. Many more details coming later this week, but let’s just say it was amazing.
Ragnar PA with an ultra team
36 hours
30.8 miles
7 skirts
6 runs
5 teammates
4 missed connections
3 attempts at napping
2 quad killing downhills (and innumerable killer uphills)
1 amazing time at Ragnar PA
Next up…
Australia and New Zealand – We’ll be heading on an epic trip later this summer. I’m looking forward to my second visit to Sydney, as well as time in Nelsons Bay and in Auckland. I’m not so much looking forward to the LONG flights. I may or may not be considering buying the boys new tablets and I’m already debating the best Skirt Sports items to wear for 14+ hours on the plane. I am also looking forward to running a race in the cooler weather while we are there.
Wisconsin – I always take the boys for two weeks in Wisconsin and this year will be no different – except it will. This year Shoo is heading to sleep away camp for two weeks, so it will just be Jones and I heading north. I’m looking forward to some quality one on one time with my oldest, some car shopping with my dad, and hopefully a trip to Minnesota to look at colleges.
This summer has already been crazy busy and looks to not slow down any time soon. Somewhere in there I need to train for Marine Corps Marathon, as well as juggle both of my part time jobs. I’m just thankful that I seem to be mostly healed and can start picking up the miles again. Because you know what comes after MCM? A 24 hour ultra. Gulp.
What are your plans for the summer? Will there be a lot of races or travel or both? What are your best tips for surviving a super long flight???
And here are some topics to get you through the next few weeks…

When will you be in Wisconsin? We’ve got orientation in Madison in July. I’d love to connect. You have such a busy summer planned!
I’m there from August 6-17. When does your son start college?
You’re one busy girl! Your time in CO sounds fabulous. I’d LOVE to go hiking like that. And a retreat? Sign me up! On the flights to Dubai and Greece to Chicago (not as long as yours but still) sleep if you can, read of course but I did something I never ever do and it passed the most time. I binge watched Big Little Lies. Like all of it. The minute you get on the plane though, pretend in your head that it’s already the time of where you’re going. I find this helps SO much. Have so much fun!
It was a great week.
I just bought a new Kindle Fire. I need to download some movies I’ve been wanting to see so I can watch them when I can’t sleep.
Your trip down under sounds amazing. I haven’t made it to NZ yet, but I hope to before we leave Hong Kong.
I would love to do a trail ultra ragnar someday! love the medal.
Loved reading about your CO trip. My oldest lives in Steamboat Springs and we are going out there in July for my grandson’s birthday party (Yay!!!) I am also training for MCM this summer, but first, I have another marathon in Washington state in August. Italy in September for our 40th anniversary! We both have busy summers on tap!
14 hours?! Yeah, I’d need drugs to keep my flight anxiety down, and to let me sleep. I have friends who have gone to Australia and loved it.
What a busy but fun packed summer you have in store!
I’d love to stowaway in your suitcase! Someday . . .
After a long drought when it comes to travel, we do have a few trips plan — plus my longest race ever — which still needs planning — nothing compared to an ultra though! No thanks! I’ll live vicariously through you.
Aspen is one of my favorite places to visit always. Australia sounds just amazing! This heat wave we are in is not fun 🙂
Sounds like a busy summer. I go to Denver a lot for work, but I never get to go into the city and explore or go to the surrounding cities. Hopefully one of these times. I have always wanted to go to Australia……so exciting.
Oh wow! Australia AND New Zealand?? What fabulous trips you have planned! We’re headed to London in September when Major Hubs returns from his deployment …I’m with you, the older I get, the less tolerant I am to long flights! Have fun!
Oh wow! That’s quite a summer full of fun!! And I would agree that visiting Australia and New Zealand definitely qualifies as epic! Long plane ride distractions? Well, sleep, if you can get it but I definitely read. Took a few books in my carry on when we flew to France for my cousin’s wedding. Wasn’t as long as what you’re about to do but still long. Crossword puzzles? Word Searches? Jumping jacks at 35,000 feet? lol
Wow Australia and New Zealand do sound epic! The long flight will be worth it. Can’t wait to hear more!
You have some major traveling on your agenda! I’m glad to hear you’re pretty much all healed up and ready for action 😉
