I began my pursuit of a running skirt about two years ago. I didn’t consider myself a skirt girl (I’m so not a girly girl) and I certainly was never going to be one of those girls who wore skirts and knee socks for running. (Ha) But I was having a hard time finding shorts that worked for longer distances. They either rode up or were too short to begin with. After a lot of trial and error with different brands and styles, I landed on the Happy Hour Skirt by Skirt Sports and I knew I’d found my answer. Mostly.
I really liked the Happy Hour skirt. It was longer than most skirts and the compression shorts stayed put when I ran. It was totally functional and absolutely comfortable and I felt good running in it.
And then I discovered the Happy Girl Skirt and I fell in love. The main difference (from what I can tell) is that the Happy Girl Skirts have pockets on the sides of the compression shorts. Best.thing.ever. I have now run more than 15 half marathons in one of these skirts with my iphone in the pocket. (At ZOOMA, I had my iphone in one leg pocket, my bia go stick and a gel in the other leg pocket, and my hotel key in my back pocket.) In all those races, I’ve never lost anything or had any chafing. Score!!!
Yes, I have 6 Happy Girl skirts. No, it’s not nearly enough.
I love the patterns, I love the length, I love the pockets. This skirt is the perfect skirt for me! (Don’t believe me? Search “happy girl” on my blog and see just how many race reports come up LOL)
Which brings me to the final Lucky 13 giveaway…
I’m giving away a gift certificate for a Skirt Sports Gym Girl Ultra. This is their #1 best selling skirt! It has the same awesome pockets on the shorts, but is just a bit shorter. It also comes in a bunch more patterns than the Happy Girl! You will LOVE this skirt. (Picture is representative of the style, not necessarily a pattern that will be available when the gift certificate is received.)
Here’s how to get your chance to win
Are you a skirt runner? Why or why not?
Disclaimer: Skirt Sports is providing the gift certificate for the winner. I bought all of my Happy Girl Skirts and all opinions are my own.

I like running skirts for shorter distances. I ran the Kentucky Derby half in a running skirt and oh the chafing! It was fine for around 8 miles..then the shorts were riding up and that is when I was hating life! lol
i like running skirts to wear… anytime… 🙂 🙂 they have so many cute patterns!
I started out in shorts but now running skirts are all I wear – comfort is key.
I usually wear skirts for longer distances and shorts for shorter distances. I really like Lululemon skirts, but sometimes I feel like there’s a lot of fabric weighing me down.
I like my running kilts manly because it has a bigger pocket, longer in length and then I get to choose what to wear underneath.
I have never ran in a skirt but would love to give a whirl.
Who doesn’t love a running skirt with pockets?!
I have never tried one before! I live in a sometimes windy area, so I’m not sure if it would work ALL the time, but it’d be fun for when the coastal winds die down 🙂
Still looking for the perfect running skirt, maybe this is it!
i have done a few 5ks in skirts! love them!
I love skirts. Especially skirts with pockets! I feel like there’s just less chance for riding up.
I would love to run in a skirt, but they are way too short! I’d love to find one closer to knee length. I don’t wear skirts or shorts above the knee, so I end up running in capri length shorts.
I have not run in a skirt yet. I have the same problems as you and either shorts are too short or don’t stay down when I run. I had seen cute skirts and always though well dang those are cute and I can’t wear one. Thanks for you awesome review that addresses many of my own running short/skirt issues. In the future I will be looking at skirt sports to find an awesome skirt to wear for my first half marathon.
I just tried a running skirt for the first time last month and I did love the pockets. I didn’t find that the shorts on the particular skirt I tried stayed in place though. I’d love to give another one a try and see if that works any better.
I love running in skirts, I feel really cute in them!
I was the same as you, didn’t think that I would like skirts since I am not a girlie girl, but I freaking love them!
I haven’t ran in a skirt yet, because like you, I’ve been waiting to find that perfect one! The length, pockets, etc have to be just right. I might need to try one of these! Thanks for the review.
I do run in skirts, for pretty much the same reason you do. I love the combination of compression shorts that stay in place and the coverage of the skirt.
I run in skirts ALL THE TIME and the gym girl ultra is my absolute favorite!
I’m not a girly girl either. But, I do own one running skirt and I ran my 5K PR in it last year.

I also wanted to ask….do these skirts have a drawstring waist? If not, do you feel they stay up well?
I bought my first running skirt this year. I love it, and want more! These are adorable and look very practical.

I never have before, but better late than never? 😛
I never run in skirts b/c I think I look silly in them for running. But I do like to wear these skirts for travel and active weekends.
I love skirts! They hide all the chub rub and don’t ride up!
I don’t typically run in skirts. No particular reason really. I own one and wear occasionally. It’s a plain gray so it’s not fun like those in your pics. Maybe if I had a cute spunky one like that I’d wear it more 🙂
I love running in skirts. Definitely makes the chafing not as bad.
Not only do I run in my skirt, I also have done a spinning class and exercise classes in it. I have also worn mine to work when I wanted to be comfy one day!!
I’ve never run in a skirt, but I would love to try one. I like the idea of the compression shorts with pockets underneath, so I don’t need to worry about chafing, camel toe, and an all-to-accurate view of my behind!
I’ve never run in a skirt – but if I won this one if love to try it out!
I’m a guy, so can’t say I’ve run in a skirt before. But I’d probably do it on a dare.
Not only do I run in skirts I climbed Mt. Katahdin in a skirt!
I have yet to run in a skirt.
I run in a kilt
I love my Skirt Sports and like you, do not have enough. The Happy Girl is what I wear and I’ve even wore the more simpler designs with a blouse to work.
I love to wear skirts! Great patterns too 🙂
Yes, I have a couple of skirts
Honestly, I like running skirts because I can leave them on and run errands or pick up my kids from school after running without feeling weird! 🙂
I would love to run in a skirt. Have been looking for one that fits right without the chaffing. And then maybe I can work on getting my knees tanned too!
I’ve always wanted to try running in a skirt!
I don’t run in skirts, but i sure do love to shake it in Zumba in one!
Not a runner BUT I wear my SkirtSports Tough Girl and Happy Girl in the gym. They love to squat 🙂
