I’m made no secret of my love of Skirt Sports products. A skirt that is well made, cute, fits me well, and allows me to run without chafe? Sign me up.
Or perhaps just take my credit card…
But since I became an ambassador last year, I’ve fallen more and more in love with the company as well. From their Kickstarter program that helps women become runners to their partnering with Kathrine Switzer and 261 Fearless to their newest initiative #REALwomenmove, Skirt Sports is all about embowering women to get out there and take chances.
What is #REALwomenmove? It’s a movement to inspire women of all shapes, size, age, ethnicity, lifestyle, marital status, family situation, etc to MOVE. It’s a movement to empower women to embrace health and fitness and make themselves a priority.
Who is a REAL woman? She is proud of who she is. She is confident. She does not judge, but rather encourages other women. She is comfortable in her own body. She accepts and loves herself as she is. She prioritizes health and fitness.
As I’ve mentioned before, I was an adult onset runner. I used to work out some in my younger days purely for vanity purposes, but I never worked out for the sheer pleasure of moving my body. These days I run because I love it. It challenges me. It acts as my anti-depressant. It keeps me healthy.
Will it ever give me the “perfect body”? No. But it has given me a strong body. My tree trunk shaped thighs are now mostly muscle and can take me as many miles as I decide I want to go. They have yet to fail me despite the many crazy challenges I’ve sent their way.
Along my journey, I’ve had a chance to meet some more amazingly real women who are out there moving. Women pursuing the Sun with Half Fanatics, the woman pursuing a world record for the most number of marathons, ladies who have lost a lot of weight in the process, ladies who are still heavy but are out there moving anyways. I’ve met runners who are running despite debilitating diseases, runners who have run through divorces, loss of a child, loss of their parents… Sometimes you can’t see the challenges they are overcoming. The obstacles and challenges in anyone’s lives can make it difficult to get out there and move, but I’ve met so many women who make it happen.
These are the Real Women. The Real Inspiration. In Real Bodies.
Won’t you join us?
1. Post your active photos and videos by tagging #REALwomenmove and #SkirtSports. Share them with your community and lift up other REAL women by sharing their posts and encouraging them.
2. For every 5,000 hashtags, Skirts Sports will donate a Get Started Scholarship to a woman who best exemplifies the REAL women traits and/or is actively trying to break her own barriers in running and fitness. Visit the Skirt Sports #REALwomenmove page for more details and to submit your story or that of a friend.
And now, I’m heading out to move: walking around Plymouth today and then it’s time for Ragnar Cape Cod!
Love you! Love this post! Love that you are willing to put yourself out there, which is the next step in this process. The more women who can see that REAL women, just like them, are out there making it happen, the more women will start to believe that THEY can do it too.
Thanks for all you do!
I completely agree, the skirts and clothes are just a part of the awesomeness that is Skirt Sports! Happy to be a Skirt Sister with you! 🙂
You are a great example for women who move and I’m honored to be running with you on my team this weekend.
