Not so much physical flexibility, although I’m sure I could benefit from more stretching. Rather, I’m trying to stay mentally flexible about my training plan for the marathon. Since both kids are home with me for the summer and Beer Geek occasionally travels for work, I have to grab running time where it presents itself. As much as I’d like to say that I’m going to run every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, I have to realize that some weeks will have to be different, especially once the mileage really starts increasing.
Today, when I dropped Jones off at his camp, one of the moms offered to take him home with her and give me most of the day with just Shoo. I happily took her up on it (and will return the favor later this week). As soon as Shoo went down for his nap, I hit the treadmill. I got my three miles in and she’s offered to take Jones on Wednesday as well, so I can hopefully do the six mile run for that day on the treadmill. It helps that she’s a marathon runner (a “for real” one – she runs the Boston marathon every year as well as at least one other and this year she qualified in to the NYC marathon), so she knows what it’s like to squeeze in longer runs. It doesn’t hurt that her son is one of Jones’ best friends either.
My run today: hill intervals. I worked my way down (one minute up, one minute at1 %) from 6% incline to 3% incline and then kept alternating 3 and 1. I slowly increased the speed from a 10 minute pace to a little less than a 9 minute pace. Splits were 9:55, 9:05, 9:00
