Mainly Marathons Appalachian Series - South CarolinaMarch 27, 20222:47:45 What I wore: hat, tank top, long sleeve quarter zip, capris, and Altra Rivera Location: Seneca, SC (State #41!) Let's just start out with the truth - this race was the hardest of the races and pretty much sucked. I chose to do the early start again because if I didn't there would be no shower at the end. As it turns out, it was a good thing. It was chillier than the previous races and I had some chafing from my skirt from the previous day, so I wore capris instead of a skirt. Upon arrival at the start, we were told that the course was shortened due to construction. On a "loop" course, that just means that you'll be running more laps. But the bad news was that … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #84: Appalachian Series – Georgia
Mainly Marathons Appalachian Series - AlabamaMarch 26, 20222:41:09 What I wore: hat, tank top, a Skirt Sports Lotta Breeze Skirt, compression socks, and Altra Rivera Location: Macon, GA (State #40!) After the race in Alabama, I decided that taking the early start in Georgia made sense. Beer Geek could drop me off and go back to the hotel and then he would not have to wait as long for me to finish when he was done with his 10K. We started off in the dark, which made it hard to tell exactly what the topography was, but it was cool and quiet and a nice first lap. It was 6 laps again and an out and back on a paved surface with plenty of shade. I ended up loving this course and on my second to the last loop, I ran the back half … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #83:Appalachian Series – Alabama
Mainly Marathons Appalachian Series - AlabamaMarch 25, 20222:38:10 Temp: high 40s-low 50s What I wore: hat, tank top, a Skirt Sports Hover Skirt, compression socks, and Altra Rivera Location: Eufaula, AL I've been wanting to run this race for several years, but it used to be a fall series and fall was just too crazy of a time for me to be away from home. Plus, that's hurricane season and all the races seemed to have wicked weather. During the pandemic, Mainly Marathons decided to move this race to the spring and it happened to fall squarely between the boys' spring breaks. Beer Geek and I flew down to Atlanta and drove from there. It was nice to get out for our first kid free vacation since we went to Bermuda in 2020. The … [Read more...]
Hotel Coffee is better than no coffee…
Brrr! March came in like a lamb in Virginia with some warm weather, but I'm up in Michigan getting the kid for spring break and it's definitely not warm here. I'm currently sitting in my hotel room waiting for classes to be over so we can head home, so I figured I'd join Deb and Coco for some coffee talk. If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that I flew for the third time since early 2020 yesterday. My first trip was to Cape Cod to put on the ZOOMA race. Yesterday's trip went so much better! Everything was on time and all the details went super smooth. I'm really hoping that this means airlines are getting their feet back under them. If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that I made a tactical error choosing my hotel for last … [Read more...]
Runfessions of a Really Cold Runner
This month has both been about a million years long AND flown by at the same time. I really meant to write more often this month (and actually wrote some posts in my head, which I had not done in a long time), but I never seemed to find time to write. But I have some Runfessions to get out there, so I'm hooking up with Marcia to bare my sole. I runfess that even though we are just turning the Omicron corner here, I'm making plans to travel to some races. Right now we are planning to drive, but I'm hopeful that things will change enough that I'm comfortable flying. I have another Mainly Marathons series in mind - the Appalachian Series. But I runfess that I've BTDT on the 7 races in 7 days thing, so I'm only planning to do the three … [Read more...]
Wrapping up 2021: a roller coaster year
It's hard to believe that it's been 2 years since Covid became a virus "of interest". It was a few more weeks before we started hearing about it and a little over two months before the US shutdown, but the growth had already begun. 2020 went from a year with amazing plans to a year of just trying to make things work in a heartbeat. 2021 has been a different sort of challenge - if 2020 was locked in an escape room trying to get out, 2021 was more like riding a roller coaster. At one point, things seemed to be returning to normal, but then Delta. And then we seemed to be getting that under control with vaccines and boosters and then Omicron. In some ways, the ups and downs have been harder than the consistent down that was 2020, but there … [Read more...]
Meeting up for Virtual Coffee
Ok, let's be honest, the meetup may be virtual, but the coffee is absolutely not. I'm pretty sure I would not survive without coffee to start my day. I'm joining Deb and Coco for a virtual meetup - some day I'll get to meet up for real with people again. If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that I signed up for another virtual challenge. Some of you may remember my 7 half marathons in 7 states in 7 days that I've done in the past with Mainly Marathons. Well, they offered a virtual where you can run up to all 50 states between October and February. I decided to aim for 15 states. Why that number? That's the option that is just over what I have left to run a half marathon in all 50 states. Running them virtually is not the same, but … [Read more...]
Kicking off 2020 with some new goals
Yes, I realize we are already more than a week into 2020. But mentally, with the way the holiday fell this year, it feels like 2020 started last Monday. So, I'm only a week behind in figuring life out. It's going to be an interesting year, with some things still very up in the air. Things like what schools my kids will be going to and what job my husband will be doing, but hey, my work is fairly stable and my injury is a minor soreness here and there, so I can plan MY life LOL. Running Add some races to my half marathon count. Last year I stalled out after managing 4 half marathons in the early part of the year. Between work and deciding to cheer as a unicorn, I had nothing in the fall. So far this year, I've signed up for 2 in May and … [Read more...]
I Hate Summer Training: June Runfessions
Temperature wise, we are in full on summer. This week has been in the high 80s/low 90s all week, sometimes with matching humidity.`Welcome to Virginia in the summer! But mentally, we are barely there. School just ended last week. This week Jones has been in a full time training for the work he'll be doing this summer. Shoo has been lazing, but also just joined his summer activity. While I'm excited for both of them to be doing the cool programs that they are doing, the schedules will be erratic, so I'll be juggling a lot this summer. Which leads me to Marcia's runfessional... I must runfess that I hate having a training plan in the summer. Our schedule during the school season is pretty consistent, but we are all over the board … [Read more...]
Setting some S.M.A.R.T Goals for 2019
In 2018, I didn't sit down and come up with specific goals for the year. So, it should come as no surprise that I feel like I didn't really move forward in most areas of my life last year. I'm not disappointed about that as I spent most of the year trying to find a new balance between being a mom, working more, and still finding time to train. As we roll into 2019, I feel like I made some good progress on life management, so now I'd like to start moving forward again. To that end, I'm returning to the style of goal planning I used for several years before 2018. Running Run 5-10 "local" races. I know that in the spring I would like to run my favorite four mile race again, I'm going to try to get into the MCM 17.75K, I've already signed … [Read more...]
Evaluating my 2017 goals
2017 is mere days from ending. I still have 6 more runs and 14.4 more miles to complete my year. I'm taking the boys to visit my parents for a few days - where the temps are barely in the single digits. I have a feeling I'll be hitting the treadmill each day for the three days I'm there. Meanwhile, it's time to evaluate my 2017 so that I can start firming up my 2018. Running Get back into the local race scene. I knocked this goal out of the park. I ran 5 races with Pacers Running - my favorite local race company. Over the years, I have run many of their races and never been disappointed. This women led organization ROCKS the DC area race scene. Find some speed again. I did pretty well with this. I hit my goals at the GW … [Read more...]
Rating my year at the 6 month point
At the end of each month, we've been asking you to rate your running month as part of Tuesdays on the Run. As we close out June, I'm also going to check in on my annual goals too. As far as June goes, it started off strong and then flatlined. My body didn't bounce back as well after the Heartland race series as it has after other series. I really have no one to blame but myself. I did a lot of speedwork this spring, but I didn't do a lot of back to back runs. I also didn't do as many double digit runs as planned. Just this past week, I finally started feeling more like myself on the run. I no longer feel like I'm running through mud. I'm quite thankful for that as the I need all the energy I can find to start Hansons Marathon Method in the … [Read more...]
