Many many years ago, we met a young brewer and I fell in love with his beers. OK, one beer in particular - his Wee Heavy. The brewer, Bill Madden, moved around a few times to other breweries and Beer Geek and I followed him wherever he went. I don't know if he knew he had a fan girl, but I was totally that girl. And then about 10 years ago, we had the chance to be involved when he opened his own brewpub. Over the last 9 years, I have spent many many hours at Mad Fox and with the amazing friends that we have made through there. I got to brew Wee Heavy once... I celebrated my 40th birthday there... We celebrated our 20th anniversary there... We spent more weekend days than I can count at festivals … [Read more...]
Put your oxygen mask on first
Last week was a hard week. I was dealing with a couple of really stressful things, as well as just having a lot going on. And I responded poorly. I skipped a few workouts and I ate my feelings. (And then I went to Costco and bought ALL the carbs so I could continue eating my feelings. Lesson learned: don't go to Costco when you are stressed.) By Friday evening, I was just done. Unfortunately, despite going to bed early, I had a rough night (Jones had the ACT on Saturday morning. I've discovered that if I have anything that makes me get up earlier than usual, that I don't sleep well. I need to fix this.) Saturday, after I dropped Jones at his test, I decided I needed to just stop. I needed to find a way to get my head on straight - I … [Read more...]
Duckpin Bowling and Love the Run 5K
It's Monday, mmmm, Monday. Hmm, that doesn't quite have the same feel as "It's Friday, frfrfr, Friday" does... We have a busy, but fun weekend this weekend. On Saturday, Beer Geek wanted to try out something new to us - duckpin bowling. What, you ask, is duckpin bowling? Well, it's bowling with small balls (3.5-5 pounds) and smaller pins. While it looks a lot like regular bowling, the different weight and sizes make the pins act differently. And I'll be the first to admit that we kept the bumpers up for the whole time we bowled. It would have been a depressing game otherwise LOL. I also found that I actually had a preference of which ball to use, even though they all looked basically the same. Certain balls just seemed to slip … [Read more...]
My crazy awesome weekend
I knew this weekend was going to be a little crazy, but we added in a wild card on Friday night that made it just a touch more so. Friday we went out to dinner at my favorite brewpub aka Mad Fox. While we were there, the owner mentioned that he was going to put my favorite beer on tap as the "stealth" beer (as in you have to know to ask for it). I went from "I'm just going to have one beer tonight" to "Let's take home a growler" in a matter of seconds. Let's just say that Emz may have gotten some slightly less than sober texts late that evening. Good thing she was running all night and I wasn't disturbing her sleep. ;o) Saturday dawned too early and way too bright. Thankfully, a big bottle of nuun got me pulled together because … [Read more...]
Enjoying the Nation’s Capital
Although there are things I don't like about this area (too much traffic and expensive houses to name just a couple), there are a lot of things I like about living where we do. One of those is that a decision to head into the city requires little more than grabbing my bag and a stroller and heading out the door. Saturday was a beautiful day and we've all been going a little stir crazy with the boys being out of school. On a whim, we decided to go into the city and grab lunch and check out the train display at Union Station. We walked to the metro and hopped a train. Cool thing #1 - our metro cards from the day have Barack Obama on them in honor of the upcoming inauguration. I made sure we had a few extra cents on them so that the boys … [Read more...]
