If you've been around these parts for a while, you know I thrive on doing crazy things. I've never quite crossed over to an ultra runner or even a consistent marathon runner, but I love to do things like Ultra Ragnar (6 runs instead of 3) and multiple marathons or half marathons in back to back days. So, it should come as no surprise that I jumped on the Yeti 24 hour ultra. What may be a surprise is that I did that on Tuesday and then on the weekend, I jumped on another challenge - 42.5k in 42 hours. Oh, and in case you were wondering, I was not in any way trained up for either one. But when have a I ever let that stop me. For those who don't know, the Yeti involved running 5 miles every four hours for 24 hours, basically 6 runs … [Read more...]
Race views and ZOOMA challenges
Today's topic for Tuesdays on the Run is "Best things seen at a race". I've seen some pretty amusing things: guys running only in thongs, jogglers, dribblers (literally a guy dribbling a basket ball the whole race), awesome costumes, awful costumes, etc. But, despite running with my phone, I pretty much never take pictures and I have the memory of a gnat, so I leave you with this... Moving right along.. Here are our upcoming topics: 10/23 – Standout Post-Race Food 10/30 – Halloween! 11/6 – Racing Mistakes 11/13 – The Best City I Ever Ran In Is… 11/20 – Black Friday And October 16 at 10am EST, ZOOMA opens its winter challenges. Five Minute Friday: #RunWithMirna
Monday is the Boston Marathon. Since I haven't aged in yet, I'm joining Skirt Sports and Mirna Valerio's little challenge. Mirna Valerio - The Mirnavator and a fellow Skirt Sports Ambassador is running the Boston Marathon on Monday for the first time. Let's show our support and run it with her! Here's how it works (NOTE: you can switch days depending on your work/life schedules!): Saturday: Run 3.1 miles while Mirna knocks out the BAA 5k to stay loose. Sunday: Rest day - Take a moment to give someone a Random Act of Support (text, call, post, email). Monday: Run the Boston Marathon (or whatever your goal distance may be) with Mirna by using the mileage converter. Choose 26.2 exercises & hashtag #RunWithMirna as you … [Read more...]
5 Reasons I’m excited about 2017 ZOOMA Annapolis
This year I hit my 9th year as a blogger. In that time, I've run 6 marathons and 62 half marathons. But what you might not know is that prior to starting this blog, I'd only run a small handful of races, with the longest one being the Army 10 Miler (and I could barely walk after it.) I started my blog because I wanted to run the Marine Corps Marathon and Beer Geek was tired of hearing about my training. That's right - I decided to run a marathon despite being a newbie runner and never having run past 10 miles. Luckily I gave myself plenty of time to train. Enter ZOOMA Annapolis. I decided that if I was going to run a marathon, I should probably run a half marathon first. I targeted ZOOMA because it was in the right place in my … [Read more...]
Holiday Fitness Challenges
I believe in embracing the holidays. I believe in indulging myself during the holidays. You won't see tips here about how not to overeat at a party or how to avoid holiday weight gain. Nope. Don't get me wrong - I don't change my generally healthy eating habits and I don't treat every event as a party (and we keep our events to a reasonable number at the holidays.) I just allow myself to enjoy the tasty treats and drinks at those parties we do choose to go to. Instead of policing my eating at events, I maintain my water intake, eat extra veggies when I'm at home, and try to move more. To that end, I am participating in a number of fitness challenges this holiday season. First, I am joining Another Mother Runner's Stride Through … [Read more...]
3 March Challenges: 200 miles, #ZOOMAphotoaday, #happyfitMarch
I am *SO* done with winter. *SO* done. Winter doesn't seem to be quite done with us yet, but I see spring just over the horizon. I.can.not.wait! (Nevermind that then we'll be dealing with allergies. I've spent the entire winter stuffed up from colds. I'm used to breathing being a challenge in and of itself.) March 1 starts 3 challenges for me: 1 personal and 2 fun! My mileage goal for March is 200 miles. 200 miles?!? I know many serious runners hit that regularly, but despite training for two marathons and a five half marathons in five days series, I've never quite done it. I almost got there last year, but ended up injured. It's going to be close. I will have to hit pretty much every.single.run I have … [Read more...]
Something I haven’t done in a while
I went out for a "long" run today. I planned to take it slow and easy and aimed for a minimum of 4 miles and a goal of 6 miles. Not only did I finish the 6 miles, I added on more mile and negative split the run!!! This was only the second time I've done more than 6.5 miles since my half marathon in March. Whoa. And there was no pain. My splits: Mile 1: 10:58 (always good to start a run uphill, oy) Mile 2: 10:18 Mile 3:10:39 (this was actually where I was trying to be LOL) Mile 4: 10:28 Mile 5: 10:05 (Hello, endorphins!) Mile 6: 9:50 (Fastest mile!!!) Mile 7: 10:19 Gotta love a long run where your fastest mile is near the end. In addition to my long run today, I had to get in a workout yesterday for Tall Mom's "mile … [Read more...]
