I can't believe we are nearing the end of July. I feel like all I've been doing is running, drinking beer, and taking my kids places. Jones and I are currently on another college trip - this time to Ohio. In four days we are hitting four colleges, 2 zoos, an aquarium, and an aviary. I'm tired already. So let's get to the runfessing with Marcia... I must runfess that I've hit that point in summer training when I am just DONE. The heat combined with the miles is just not my cup of tea. That's not to say I'm not doing it, but it's certainly been more of a mental challenge. I am proud of myself for hitting the trail at 4am with a friend for my last long run. Four.A.M. If you've been reading for a while, you know I don't ever choose to … [Read more...]
I Hate Summer Training: June Runfessions
Temperature wise, we are in full on summer. This week has been in the high 80s/low 90s all week, sometimes with matching humidity.`Welcome to Virginia in the summer! But mentally, we are barely there. School just ended last week. This week Jones has been in a full time training for the work he'll be doing this summer. Shoo has been lazing, but also just joined his summer activity. While I'm excited for both of them to be doing the cool programs that they are doing, the schedules will be erratic, so I'll be juggling a lot this summer. Which leads me to Marcia's runfessional... I must runfess that I hate having a training plan in the summer. Our schedule during the school season is pretty consistent, but we are all over the board … [Read more...]

Runfessing over a cup of coffee
Since Marcia opened the Runfessional late and Deb and Coco are hosting the Ultimate Coffee Date, I've decided to combine the fun into one post. If we were having coffee, I'd runfess that I meant to write this post days ago, but life kept getting in the way. In fact, it took me all day today to actually hit publish. I've been juggling two part time jobs for a while, but recently I started working a regular shift at the library as well as picking up a few other shifts as they need people. I like it and I'm still not working 40 hours a week, but it's taking a bit of adjustment to fit in my non-paid activities now. Speaking of non-paid, if we were having coffee, I'd runfess that I'm nervous about getting in all the miles for … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #79: Rutgers Unite Half Marathon
Rutgers Unite Half MarathonNew Brunswick, NJApril 14, 20192:27:59 Temp: mid 50sWhat I wore: hat, tank top, Skirt Sports Lotta Breeze Skirt, ProCompression socks, and Altra One 2.5 Beer Geek and I both signed up to run this race. One of us was actually trained for it. {Hint: it wasn't me.} Life through us a curve ball in the form of a cancelled flight by Southwest. (They cancelled our kids' flight two hours before the flight. They blamed weather, but it was the ONLY flight cancelled or even delayed. I call BS. I might still be livid 2 weeks later...) Anyways, thanks to my parents and a very understanding race director, we were able to run. Never mind that we had to drive to New Jersey via Pittsburgh. We made it there. That's all … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #78: Mike to Mike Half Marathon
Mike to Mike Half MarathonFayetteville, NCMarch 24, 20193:08:39 Temp: 38* at the start, 50s by the endWhat I wore:hat, tank top, Skirt Sports Happy Girl, ProCompression socks, and Altra One 2.5 (that I switched into from Escalante at the last minute.) I signed up for this race on a whim because my friend Liz was an ambassador and offered me a free place to stay. I somehow totally ignored the fact that it was a 5 hour drive home. On I-95. On a Sunday afternoon. Oops. Oh, and I didn't actually run more than 6 miles between my half marathon in December and this one. Oops. My drive down went smoothly and I managed to meet up with another friend from Skirt Sports for lunch on the way. When I got to Fayetteville, I scored the … [Read more...]
Finalizing my 2019 race plans
I can't believe it's March and I'm just now figuring out my race plans. Everything hinged on getting into the new Marine Corps Marathon 50k. If I had not, I'd have upended everything to find another race. So, here we go... March 17 - Four Courts Four - I run or volunteer at this race as often as possible (sometimes both.) It starts with a wicked fast downhill, but what goes down must come up, so it ends with a painful uphill. Luckily it also ends with beer. Guinness to be exact. March 24 - Mike to Mike Half Marathon (All American Marathon) - This race goes from downtown Fayetteville to Fort Bragg. I'm pretty excited about this race because a number of Skirt Sports ambassadors will be there. I'm less excited about the fact that … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #76: Women’s Half Marathon in Auckland, New Zealand
Women's Half Marathon Auckland, New Zealand July 1, 2018 2:35:09 Temp: 40s-50s What I wore:hat, tank top, a ZOOMA half zip, a Skirt Sports Lotta Breeze Skirt, compression socks, and Altra One 2.5 When we first started planning our trip to New Zealand and Australia, I immediately began looking for races. I had a couple on my list and as it turned out, the Women's Half Marathon worked perfectly for our travel plan. What I didn't anticipate was my ankle injury and a beer festival. That's right - the Great Australasian Beer Spectapular was happening in Auckland the day before the race. There was no way Beer Geek was going to be missing out on that. My only hope was to moderate my drinking. I succeeded, sort of. Sunday … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #75: Frederick Running Festival Half Marathon
Frederick Running Festival Half Marathon May 5, 2018 2:22:18 Temp: 50s-60s What I wore:hat, tank top, arm sleeves, a Skirt Sports Gym Girl Ultra Skirt, compression socks, and Altra One 2.5 The weather prediction for this race was originally pretty unpleasant - 50s and rainy. But we got lucky and the rain moved out and it ended up being ok running weather, although a bit humid and warm near the end. I stayed in Frederick the night before at a friend's house, so race morning was pretty easy. I walked over to the start, arriving 10 minutes early, and ran into another Ragnar Ambassador. A few minutes later, it was go time. As soon as I started running, I could tell I was tired. This was my third half marathon in 3 weeks, … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #74: National Women’s Half Marathon
National Women's Half Marathon April 29, 2018 2:11:57 Temp: mid 40s to low 50s What I wore:hat, tank top, Reebok half zip, , a Skirt Sports Lotta Breeze Skirt, compression socks, and Altra One 2.5 Once again Mother Nature decided to mess with us. Saturday was a warm and gorgeous day. Sunday dawned cold and windy. Yes, layers again. Sigh. Also, sticking with this spring's theme, I hadn't planned to run this race, but when the opportunity to transfer a cheap bib happened, I took it. Nevermind that I was getting up at 2am the morning before to volunteer. Who needs sleep anyways? I got up at 4am and was out the door to meet some MRTT friends by 5:10am. I had on one of Jones' outgrown sweatshirts and a pair of toddler mittens and … [Read more...]
The year without a spring
After a long winter, there's nothing I love more than the first few runs of spring where a skirt and tank top are the perfect clothing. That time when it's warm enough to not need layers, but not so warm that you feel like you are melting at the end of the run. Yeah, we aren't going to get that weather this year. I know that Virginia is lucky - we aren't getting the snow and cold that states farther north are, but I'm so over being cold. And I'm even more over the temperature swings. One day it's too hot to run outside because it's in the high 80s and I'm not acclimated to it. The next day I'm pulling out my Toasty Cheeks Tights again. I think I've worn my gloves on runs more in April than I did in February. And to add insult … [Read more...]
Lifetime Half Marathon #71: Rehoboth Beach Half
This year has been filled with amazing races. I tried out a couple of new races that I loved: St. Patrick's Day 10K and the Navy Air Force Half Marathon. I also returned to some old favorites: Marine Corps 17.75K, GW Parkway 10 Miler (one of my all time favorite races), Marine Corps Marathon, and then, just this past weekend, we went back to Rehoboth Beach for their half marathon. I know that the topic for Tuesdays on the Run this week is "Favorite Race in 2017", but really they were all my favorites. So, I'm going to recap my most recent favorite race. Rehoboth Beach Running Company Half December 2, 2017 2:12:48 Temp: low to mid 40s What I wore:hat, tank top, Reebok half zip, a Skirt Sports Happy Girl, compression socks, and Altra … [Read more...]
