Two weeks ago, I ran a pretty decent 20 mile run. It was the first time in YEARS that I'd run that far in training. I beat my pace goal, I felt good the whole time, and I managed to actually eat something on the run. Thank goodness for rice krispy treats! I wasn't even sore afterwards. I even ran a speedy (for me) 6 mile run as part of a relay race two days later. And then things started to fall apart. I've had some tenderness where my glute and hamstring meet off and on all summer. It never really hurt - felt more like DOMS actually. But it hit at random times, including when I wasn't even working out. As a typical runner, I ignored this whisper and went about my training plan. Last week, I cut every run short, not … [Read more...]
Registering during Marine Corps Marathon Rush Registration
Running the Marine Corps Marathon is on many people's bucket list. And once you've run it once, it grabs you by the heart strings and you want to run it again. (Even if you claim you don't. Not that I'd know anything about that.) But getting into the race requires a little bit of luck. In recent years, in addition to the other options, MCM has offered a rush registration. This is a 20 minute window to register that will allow up to 7,000 runners to register before the lottery opens. It starts at noon - usually on a day in mid-march. Here's how the process goes: Set an alarm on your phone so you don't forget. Ok, maybe set 2 or 3. Actual number dependent on your level of OCD. Dress in your lucky MCM registering clothes. If … [Read more...]
Runfessing that I’m ready for January to end
Here we are nearing the end of January and I'm gonna jump right in with the Runfessions: This month has not gone as planned. Not from a running standpoint, not from a housekeeping standpoint, not from a momming standpoint. So, yeah, January can just step aside (and take next week's cold weather predictions with it.) I'm joining Marcia to runfess my sins of the last month. So far this month, my kids have already had two snow days and 2 or 3 late starts, in addition to a holiday. They also have this coming Monday off for teacher grading day. I runfess that despite my best intentions, I slept in every day that they did. Sleeping in only means sleeping until 8am, but that means my morning workout time is gone. I've managed to get in most … [Read more...]
January Ultimate Coffee Date because BRRR…
I can't believe it's been a year since I last had coffee wth everyone. I don't post on the weekends these days and I never seem to remember to post the Friday beforehand. I like combining Friday Five and Coffee, I'm just a slacker apparently. But I've been drinking so much coffee to stay warm that it seems appropriate to meet up with friends for coffee. Anyways, I'm joining up with my friends Deborah and Coco for a virtual coffee date (they are both local to me - I should meet up for a real coffee date...) I’m also linking up with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for Friday Five 2.0. If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that I'm really struggling with my goal of rolling with the punches. I want everything on the … [Read more...]
Marine Corps 17.75 2017 Race Recap
Marine Corps 17.75 March 25, 2017 1:58:22 Temp: mid-50s What I wore: hat, short sleeve shirt, Skirt Sports Happy Girl skirt, compression socks, and my Altra Escalante shoes I love this race. It's one of the hardest races I run each year, but I keep coming back. I didn't originally sign up to run because of a scheduling conflict, but had a change hours before the transfer period closed. A quick plea to the Facebook group and Boom! I was in. Life continued to be a little crazy right up to the race. My Saturday plans changed more than once and then on Friday Shoo stayed home with a stomach bug. Thanks to him just feeling icky and a mom friend being "on call", I was still able to shoot down to Quantico with friends to pick up my … [Read more...]
That time I had to runfess to…
How is it nearly the end of February? Or really, how is it only February? Why do I ask that? Because I haven't run in layers in weeks. In fact, yesterday I wore a Happy Girl and a tank top and was too hot. We shall rename 2017 the year without a winter. So, what do I have to runfess to this month? In theory, I'm in training for a 10 mile race at the end of April. In reality, I runfess that I haven't run a double digit run since Marine Corps Marathon at the end of October. I've been running 5-6 days per week and I've actually been doing a fair amount of speed work, but I can't be bothered to run for more than an hour. I can't run the Marine Corps 17.75 this year due to family conflicts. So, I'm getting a code from a friend who … [Read more...]
Thinking out loud: Runner logic
A few weeks ago: "I don't think I'm going to try to get into the Marine Corps 17.75. I don't want to run the Marine Corps Marathon next fall anyways, so why spend the money?" A few days ago: "Well, if I happen to be home at the right time, I'll see about registering. I know people who will want the code for the marathon." … [Read more...]
Want to run the Marine Corps Marathon? Here’s how…
Known as the People's Marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon does not take place until late October, 30 October in 2016. But despite that, it's time to start thinking about running this iconic race. I firmly believe it's one of the best marathons out there, especially for first time marathoners. Every year I struggle with the decision to make this my fall A race or not. Don't believe me? Here are the five reasons I think you should run it. Got you convinced? OK, now you need to get in and Option 1 for entering the Marine Corps Marathon is taking happening today at noon! Option 1: Register for (and finish) the 17.75K race. Registration takes place at noon today and the lucky entrants will be allowed to run the race on April 2. Registration … [Read more...]
