When I was hired a year ago to work the Nike Women Half Marathon in DC, I had no idea what I was getting into. I knew I was going to be helping to manage packet pickup and I had plenty of experience volunteering (and picking up my own packets LOL), but I'd never been involved from site visits all the way through execution. Honestly, it was a pretty amazing experience. I could go on and on and tell you every little detail, but instead, I'm just going to say that I loved every minute of it (yes, even when we lost power for a short while on the busiest day, yes, even when I'd been standing for 10 hours straight). If I didn't have kids and this paid as much as my real job , I could happily make race management my career. So, here is the … [Read more...]
A question and a winner
Life is on its way back to normal around here. After working more than 40 hours last week at the Nike Women Half Marathon packet pick up and then managing a fluids tent on race day (read: I was at the race before 4:30am), I face planted yesterday afternoon. After a short nap yesterday and a good night's sleep last night, I'm ready to work on getting my life back to its usual level of chaos. Oh, and I might actually want to go for a run since I'm running a 5k and a half marathon this coming weekend. (Yes, I'm am crazy, why do you ask?) So here's my question for you: I want to buy myself a NWHM half zip. Proud of myself
Some things you may or may not know about me: I don't like exercise, unless it's running I am not an evening exerciser. If things don't happen before dinner, the likelihood of me doing anything is somewhere between slim and none. I'm 42 (GAH!) and as much as I don't enjoy strength exercises, I need to do them. Yesterday was one of those days where I not only had a lot to get done, I needed to do some of it not sweaty. (OK, as hot as it got, I was still sweaty. But I was clean under it. LOL) So, instead of running and then immediately doing the strength workout for Best Body Boot Camp like I have been, I ran and then jumped in the shower. I spent the day working, meeting friends for lunch, and meeting my boss for our monthly … [Read more...]
State #9: Rainy and Hilly
After a week of spring break down in Mississippi, we headed up to Lynchburg, Tennessee for the Oak Barrel Half Marathon. Poor Shoo had a stomach bug, so we ended up stopping multiple times for him. What should have been an 8 hour drive ended up being quite a bit longer. Finally, we made it to Lynchburg and headed over to the Jack Daniel's Distillery to pick up my race packet and take a tour. The tour was awesome and I highly recommend taking it if you are ever in the area. I enjoyed it, despite hating the smell of whisky and suffering from flashbacks to college football games. ;o) Saturday morning, Beer Geek woke me to tell me that a huge thunderstorm was going to hit right as the race started. I quickly headed over to the start line … [Read more...]
