As I sit here with my coffee, it's only 74* out. I know that is still warm, but it's way better than it's been for most of the summer. Of course, I'll be much happier when the temp starts with a 5 or a 6, but I'll take a teeny tiny cool down. Since it's the first weekend of the month, it's time for coffee! If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that yesterday's 20 mile run was a huge confidence booster. The Marine Corps Marathon 50K has a required 12:30 pace per mile and lately my runs have been barely that, even when I'm only running a few miles. But yesterday I decide to do Galloway running because it was most important to just get the miles done. Not only did I finish, I averaged a 12:06 pace. Since you really only have to … [Read more...]
I think I need a coffee IV
How on earth is it August? July FLEW by this year. I'd say I'm not even sure what I did, but really I spent it running, visiting colleges, and trying to keep up with my 3 jobs. Oy. I've drunk an unreasonable amount of coffee to make that happen. So today I'm joining Deb and Coco for a coffee date. If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that my training for the 50K is going surprisingly well. (Ask me again tomorrow after my long run.) I've upped my overall mileage and I ran a half marathon at my goal pace last weekend and, except for an awful mile 12, it went well. I'm currently 24 days into a run streak and yesterday I ran twice. And my body seems to be holding up well. If we were having coffee, I'd tell you that I managed to … [Read more...]
Coffee and Runfessions for the Month of May
This blog is coming to you from the Denver Airport at 4:30am. I just spent an amazing weekend with the best tribe a girl could ask for. The annual Skirt Sports retreat is an amazing and energizing event, made even better by the fact that I get to spend time with some of my closest friends who live in different parts of the country. I will recap the event later, but for now, just know that my cup is full. Speaking of full cups, I'm joining Deb and Coco for a virtual cup (in addition to the copious amount of coffee I need to survive today after my 2:30am wakeup.) I may also be including a few runfessions ala Marcia. If we were having coffee, I’d tell that I swear that May and June are the longest, most stressful months of the year and … [Read more...]
Runfessing over a cup of coffee
Since Marcia opened the Runfessional late and Deb and Coco are hosting the Ultimate Coffee Date, I've decided to combine the fun into one post. If we were having coffee, I'd runfess that I meant to write this post days ago, but life kept getting in the way. In fact, it took me all day today to actually hit publish. I've been juggling two part time jobs for a while, but recently I started working a regular shift at the library as well as picking up a few other shifts as they need people. I like it and I'm still not working 40 hours a week, but it's taking a bit of adjustment to fit in my non-paid activities now. Speaking of non-paid, if we were having coffee, I'd runfess that I'm nervous about getting in all the miles for … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #79: Rutgers Unite Half Marathon
Rutgers Unite Half MarathonNew Brunswick, NJApril 14, 20192:27:59 Temp: mid 50sWhat I wore: hat, tank top, Skirt Sports Lotta Breeze Skirt, ProCompression socks, and Altra One 2.5 Beer Geek and I both signed up to run this race. One of us was actually trained for it. {Hint: it wasn't me.} Life through us a curve ball in the form of a cancelled flight by Southwest. (They cancelled our kids' flight two hours before the flight. They blamed weather, but it was the ONLY flight cancelled or even delayed. I call BS. I might still be livid 2 weeks later...) Anyways, thanks to my parents and a very understanding race director, we were able to run. Never mind that we had to drive to New Jersey via Pittsburgh. We made it there. That's all … [Read more...]
If nothing else, February is shorter
January is over. It seriously may have been 9,354,200 days long. Or just 31 of the longest days ever. My kids barely attended school even though we really didn't have that much snow. In fact, with today's late start, we now have an entire week where they did not go a single full day. Last week, I think they had one full day. Oy. But, since we are starting off February with another late start, I actually have time for coffee (and I'm all caught up on sleep as I've slept in until 8 am 4 of the last 7 days...) I’m joining Deb and Coco‘s virtual coffee date and sharing what I'd chat about over coffee. If we were having coffee, I'd tell you I'm super excited to be a Skirt Sports Ambassador again this year! I love so … [Read more...]
2018 in Pictures
I love to write this post every year. It gives me a chance to look back and reminds me that even if the year was not perfect, that there was a lot of good in the year. This was a crazy busy year! I traveled for work more than I ever have, but I guess that's what happens when you work for a race organization that has races around the country. So, here we go... January January was a quiet month for me on the racing front, but that's ok as I was concentrating on building strength and getting in shape for the year to come. I got invited back to the Altra Red Team and I spent a lot of time in my workout room. I also made some predictions for 2018. (Spoiler: I was spot on LOL) February February started with being invited back as a … [Read more...]
5 favorites that will help me enjoy the winter
Generally speaking, I prefer cooler weather over hot weather. I'd rather put on more layers than be wearing as little as I can in public and still being hot. And after a rather elusive fall, winter apparently arrived yesterday in the form of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, so I guess I need to get mentally ready for winter now. Berres Brothers coffee - Most of the year I drink Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts coffee - whichever is on sale in the grocery store. But once a year, Berres Brothers, a Wisconsin based coffee company, has a big sale and I stock up. I love that they have a ridiculous number of flavor options and that the coffee is smoother than Starbucks. I also love that I'm supporting a small local company (not my local, but … [Read more...]
Have Skirt Sports, Will Travel #sisterhoodofthetravelingskirt
Post contains Affliliate links, which means that if you purchase through them, I get paid a small commission. It's been about 7 years since I first put on a Skirt Sports skirt and went out for a run. That first skirt was the Happy Hour skirt (basically a Happy Girl without the pockets). I fell in love with that skirt - for running. As I slowly built up my collection (I was the queen of clearance sales and ebay), I got in the habit of putting on a running skirt, running bra, and tank top when I'd get up. As a stay at home mom to two, I needed to be ready at any moment to head out on a run. Slowly but surely, the Happy Girl became a staple in my "mom uniform." In the last few years, my non-Skirt wardrobe has dwindled. I … [Read more...]
How is it already Friday again?
This week has just flown by. But time spent at my parents' house always does. I've been so busy that I realized today that I'd completely forgotten to blog this week. I guess that's a good sign - I've been too busy with real life to write. And thankfully, it's all good busy. So today, you get five random things... Today Jones and I fly home to Virginia. I'm looking forward to being home, but I also always wish I was staying here. It's been awesome spending two weeks with only one child. I haven't gotten to do this since he was 4! We got to check out the International Crane Foundation, the Minnesota Zoo, and the National Eagle Center. He's a good kid and he's starting to explore college options (GAH!) and we both survived him taking econ … [Read more...]
Here we are, runfessing again
I swear it was just yesterday that I was runfessing about my lack of running in June and here we are in July and I'm still not running much. I must runfess that I have no real excuse not to run a lot of miles - my ankle/heel is probably 90% pain free and even more so when I massage it and foam roll. I've even done some icing lately after the few times I've run this month. I know, who am I? I must also runfess that we are now down to 93 days before the Marine Corps Marathon and the last double digit run I did was the half marathon in New Zealand on July 1. Between work, the weather, my son's econ class... I can't seem to get my runs in. I really need to start training. OK, even more than that, I really need to start caring about … [Read more...]
Skirt Sports Ambassador Retreat
In addition to traipsing all over Colorado with Beer Geek, a few weeks ago I attended the Skirts Sports Ambassador Retreat, which closes with the Skirt Sports 13er, 10K, and 5K. This was my second time attending and my second time running the 5K. Maybe next year I'll brave the altitude and run the 13er. (Or not, since I love cheering in all of the other runners.) (Photo courtesy of JoAnne Vaughn, Verve Photography) The retreat starts with a cocktail party on Friday night. It's a great time to shop, catch up with old friends, and meet some new ones. It's so awesome to see so many lovely ladies all dressed in Skirt - and to drool over both the vintage items that some wear and the "coming season" that they show us in the fashion show. (I … [Read more...]
