I'm a big fan of starting Thanksgiving Day with a bit of exercise and the best venue for that is a Turkey Trot. Why? Because I'm also a big fan of eating whatever I want at Thanksgiving. I am not one who is going to give you tips and tricks to not eat your weight in pumpkin or pecan pie. (Mostly because I could totally drink a glass of water and eat an apple and still eat all.the.things at dinner. Might as well just eat all the things.) In addition to benefiting your health, most Turkey Trots also benefit local charities. Instead, here are some fun Turkey Trots in the DC area that happen on Thanksgiving morning. (There are lots of others the weekend before and after if you'd like to get some more miles in...) 5K SOME's Thanksgiving … [Read more...]
Rating May: my month long taper
As you can probably tell from the title, May was not a training month. It was supposed to be a training month, but no. Since it's our monthly "rate your month" post for Tuesdays on the Run, here's how my month went down. I wrapped up April with a Master's PR in a 10 mile race. Then I rocked out 20 miles on the trails at Ragnar Trail Richmond (ok, given the heat, I did not rock out anything. I finished the miles. I'm proud to have even done that.) And then my running came to a screeching halt. Despite a training calendar that included multiple double digit runs, my longest run in May was 6.7 miles for Ragnar's Chase the Moon. I'm still not sure what happened. It took me longer than expected to recover from Richmond and then … [Read more...]
Black Friday Runfessions
Today is Friday, right? I've been so confused about the day all week because Jones was out of town until Monday night, Shoo did not have his usual soccer practice, and neither boy had school on Wednesday. Somehow it feels like it should be Monday, but I still have three days off. Sweet! Since it's the last Friday of the month, it's time for a little runfession. I'm linking up with Marcia over at Marcia's Healthy Slice and Friday Five 2.0 with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness. I'm trying to meet a goal of 85 miles this month and it's coming down to the wire. I have 26.9 miles to go. Don't think it didn't cross my mind to just run a marathon and get most of it done. Beer Geek won his age group at the local turkey trot … [Read more...]
“Beat the Chihuahua” 5K race report
OK, maybe that wasn't the real name of the race. It was one of those races with a really cool name like "turkey trot", but for us it was definitely all about beating the chihuahua. I've run the local (as in runs right past my house) Turkey Trot for the last 5 years. I know I missed the first one as I ran literally right through it on a morning run when Shoo was a newborn. This year was the first year I convinced the boys to do it with me. To say that Shoo and Jones don't like walking is a bit of an understatement. Shoo has more energy than any one person needs, but he'd rather be on a bike or a scooter. Jones, well, he'd rather just hang with his computer and books. Thankfully, it was sunny and not too chilly and we knew a … [Read more...]
PR at the Turkey Trot
Thursday morning dawned cold, but sunny. I had a rough night with Shoo, so I got up a bit late. I ate a bit of breakfast and played musical cars (we live on the route and I wanted them off the street) and then headed over to the race. I continued my pursuit of my 1000 mile goal by running the .4 miles to the start. When I got to the start, I ran into a ton of neighbors and friends. About 1500 people were doing the race and I felt like I knew at least a quarter of them. LOL Most of the people I knew weren't planning to race the Turkey Trot, just finish it, so I moved by myself to the start. The turkey gobbled and we headed off - straight up a steep hill. Luckily it wasn't too long, so it was just a nice warm-up. The first mile was only … [Read more...]
