Lawyers Have Heart 10kJune 8, 2019 Temp: High 60s to low 70sWhat I wore:hat, tank top, a Skirt Sports Lotta Breeze Skirt, and Altra One 2.5 When I was offered a free entry to this race in exchange for a blog post, I jumped on the chance. I had never run it before and I'm trying to run all the races in the area. I'm a huge fan of the American Heart Association (I actually ran a "stop smoking" campaign for them in high school), so I'm happy to promote them. Plus, I'm training for the Marine Corps Marathon 50K and running to the race, running the race, and running home would be a great long training run. This race is often crazy hot and humid, but we were super lucky with relatively mild weather. I hadn't had time to get downtown … [Read more...]
Half Marathon #80: National Women’s Half Marathon
National Women's Half MarathonMay 5, 20192:26:57 Temp: low 60s and rainyWhat I wore:hat, tank top, a Skirt Sports Lotta Breeze Skirt, compression socks, and Altra One 2.5 I ran this race last year and enjoyed it, so when I got the chance to get the race for ~$40 for 2019, I jumped on it. But we've had a crazy rainy spring (like it's rained almost every weekend) and huge downpours were in the forecast. The race starts and ends in a not very convenient place, so I was less than thrilled with the forecast. I don't mind running in the rain, but I hate standing around in it and walking home in it. However, thanks to the rain preventing Beer Geek from going out on a bike ride, I was able to convince him to give me and a couple of … [Read more...]
5 Fun Fall Fitness Activities in the DC Area
OK, I admit I tried to come up with an "F" word for activities, but this week has been about a million years long and I'm tired. Why is it that four day weeks always seem so much longer than a regular week? Is it because we are trying to get 5 days of work into 4 days? Hmm... Anyways, I keep hearing about lots and lots of cool stuff to do this fall in the DC area. It makes me want to do all.the.things, but I'm horribly overbooked already. So, you should go do them for me... Mad Fox Brewing's Bend and Brew - Join them on September 24 for their first ever yoga and beer pairing. Bring your own yoga mat and enjoy yoga and 4 sample sizes of beer. Stick around afterwords for happy hour priced beer. I'm hoping to make it to this, but … [Read more...]
Peasantman Triathlon Race Report
OK, I know you all are going "WHAAAT??" No, I haven't been hiding secret triathlon training from you nor did I actually race a triathlon this weekend. What I did was volunteer at the Peasantman Triathlon for a few hours on Sunday morning. Peasantman is held about an hour and a half south of DC on Lake Anna and from all appearances, it's the perfect first triathlon. Everyone is super laid back and you can do a sprint or olympic distance or you can mix it up and combine distances or change your distance on the fly. Heck, a few people just did it as a duathlon and I know two of my friends just did the swim and bike. So, yeah, Peasantman is the perfect low key race to get your feet wet (pun intended) at a triathlon. I started the … [Read more...]
Wrapping up a busy week
Welcome, April! March was a rough month and I don't mind seeing it in the rear view mirror! Despite all the crazy things (car problems, sick cat, sick kids, snow day), I was happy to hit 100 miles (103 to be exact) for the fourth month in a row. I ran three races in March, but it was questionable if I was going to complete my goal miles due to a camping trip on the last two days of the month. On Thursday, Shoo and I headed out with his class for the 5th grade camping trip. I did this four years ago with Jones, so I knew what to expect. Which is to say, I knew I'd have fun, but that I'd be exhausted when I got home. The weather for the first day was supposed to be in the 50s, but the second day called for 40s and rain. I packed … [Read more...]
DC Races, You’re All My Favorites!
When it comes to racing, I'm a lucky girl. I live practically in the Nation's Capital. (And if you were to ask Beer Geek, he'd tell you that where we live used to be part of DC, but they gave it back to Virginia...) But I digress. There are so many awesome DC races and tons just out of the city. In fact, within in an hour's drive (ok, at 6am on a Saturday, not rush hour), there are races of pretty much any type, distance, or atmosphere that I could want. Admittedly, not all of them are awesome (like the one that's hot and hilly every year or the one I refer to as my bad boyfriend because I keep going back even when I don't want to or the one that was such a traffic nightmare that a lot of runners didn't make it to the start line...) All of … [Read more...]
Scenes from my Summer Running
It's hot here right now. OK, let me rephrase that. It feels like the surface of the sun here. I've never hidden my dislike of Virginia summers. And yet, it seems like every summer I find myself on a training plan that requires lots and lots of miles. Will I never learn? I live in an awesome place to run. You can run by the monuments, you can run out to Mount Vernon on a trail, you can run the (apparently very shady) Capital Crescent Trail. My run could look like this: Or this: Or this: But unfortunately, mostly it's looked like this: But that's ok, I'm catching up on my movies and books and I'm getting the miles in. And someday it won't be so hot that I feel like my brain is melting... Also, here are the … [Read more...]
Best DC Area Race: GW Parkway Classic
I swear, asking someone who lives in the DC metro area which race is their favorite is like asking a mom which child she likes best. We have some of the most amazing races in the country here: Marine Corps Marathon, Army 10 Miler, Navy Air Force half marathon, RNR DC, GW Parkway Classic 10 Miler, Woodrow Wilson Half Marathon... Expand your horizons a bit and you can run the Frederick Half Marathon, ZOOMA Annapolis, the Historic Half, the Fall Backyard Burn trail races, the Loudoun Half Marathon, the Reston 10 Miler... And that's not even touching the smaller races in the area. Seriously I could race every weekend. And I have run many of the local races, but not all of them. It's so hard to choose just one. But somehow, for today's … [Read more...]
#LetsMove at the White House
If you follow me on pretty much any form of social media, you know that on Tuesday I got to attend an awesome event at the White House. I was part of a group of about 150 bloggers who were invited to participate in "A Conversation on the Health of our Nation's Children." As you might imagine, I was pretty excited to be invited and spent Monday evening frantically texting a couple of friends for fashion advice because, umm, my usual fitness attire was not going to be appropriate. Once I got the outfit settled, it was time to stress about whether or not the Metro would be running. (Thankfully it was that day and waited to do the big shut down the day after the event. Also, Beer Geek informed me later that it only takes 80 minutes to … [Read more...]

Spring Race Season Kickoff + March into Spring Giveaway
Welcome to everyone stopping by for the March into Spring Giveaway Hop! I hope you'll stick around and become a part of the fun here, but if you are in a hurry, hop on down to the bottom of the post for entry instructions to win an Amazon gift card and links to 20+ other awesome giveaways! This past weekend kicked off my spring racing season, but that was far from the only thing going on! I feel like I was away from home from Thursday morning until Sunday afternoon, despite not actually traveling anywhere. And I hadn't planned quite such a drastic taper (since I'd hardly trained), but apparently that worked for me. But, I'm getting ahead of myself LOL. Thursday Shoo and I went on a field trip to Pamplin Historical Park. Despite … [Read more...]
The District Club: local goods delivered monthly
I am a huge fan of buying local. I shop at the farmer's market when I can get there, we used to buy a share of a steer from a (as local as you can get to Washington, DC) farm, and I'd much rather eat at a local restaurant or brewpub than a chain. So, when The District Club reached out to me about reviewing their service, I was totally on board. What's The District Club? The District Club is a subscription-based service that will allow members in D.C., Maryland and Virginia to sample a variety of treats from local, small businesses. I love this idea in theory. I never know what new things have come out locally, unless it's beer related. (What? My husband isn't called Beer Geek for nothing.) And I'm often looking for ideas for gifts … [Read more...]
