Have you ever been running along at a race, minding your own business, and then seen something that made you do a double take! That’s our topic today on Tuesdays on the Run: Bizarre things seen on the run or at races.
Here are some of the random things I’ve seen (sorry for very few pictures. I never had my phone out when I race…)
- A joggler, aka running juggler. There’s a local one who beats me regularly at races.
- A runner dribbling a basketball while he was running.
- A dude in a thong and running shoes at Ragnar.
- Random full body costumes – bananas, gorillas, superheroes, men dressed in drag…
But the best, out of the ordinary, thing I ever saw during a race?
And people wonder why I want to run the Marine Corps Marathon again this year…

During my first marathon, I saw a man in a bowtie and American flag speedo and thought “Wow, how is he running so fast with a bowtie on?!” I actually saw the same guy at another race later in the year. I guess we have similar in tastes in races!
I recounted a few of these for Marcia, but I will never understand running races in full costume. Like, running the Chicago marathon in a Halloween hot dog costume. HOW IS THAT NOT GOING TO CHAFE
I saw Dr Dribble at the Chicago Marathon a few years ago. I saw 2 guys dressed as cavemen running Chicago as well. So much entertainment at those big city runs!
“Ain’t nothin’ but a good time…”
I have seen the juggler and basketball player at races too! When I saw a dead deer while running my last 10 miler, it really freaked me out since it had rigor mortis!
I have to agree the eye candy at MCM is lottery worthy.
I really do run the wrong races. The guys in tuxedos at the Princess half are dapper, but they are wearing shirts.
Would love to see them at a race..haha.
I have seen the juggler and the dribbler and wonder how they are able to continue on the course. You would think that would be a safety issue.
I have seen the man who is dressed in the full body leotard that shows all the anatomy on it. It was a race day that was literally 98 degrees. He HAD to be hot!
ooooo….will I see those lovely men running the 10k-that would be a treat for sure!!
I need to do better at paying attention to what is happening around me….I am usually so focused on the race and running that don’t pay attention to my surroundings much ;(
This year at the Washington RnR I saw a guy running in a full Chewbacca Costume, That was the best thing I’ve seen! I do not even want to imagine what it smelled like inside that costume!
These guys were at MCM? Uh… yes, please!!!
Running in a thong. I shudder just thinking about that!
Haha! Definitely a motivator! Thongs are running shoes. Yikes!!!
Note to self: Put Marine Corps Marathon on life list. 🙂
OK that view might make me want to run the MCM too 😉
You took a picture of the most important one, though. Thank you, no, really. Thank you.
That eye candy, though…
We had a JOGGLER every year at the PGH Marathon.
That’s one of the reasons I went every year to watch.
Him and a BAGPIPE PLAYER (!)
A thong… really, wow! But the view at MCM, is quite nice 🙂
Haha! That is funny!!!I needed that this a.m. 🙂
Always happy to help!
