The year without a spring

April 16, 2018 by MCM Mama 20 Comments

After a long winter, there’s nothing I love more than the first few runs of spring where a skirt and tank top are the perfect clothing. That time when it’s warm enough to not need layers, but not so warm that you feel like you are melting at the end of the run. Yeah, we aren’t going to get that weather this year. I know that Virginia is lucky – we aren’t getting the snow and cold that states farther north are, but I’m so over being cold. And I’m even more over the temperature swings.

One day it’s too hot to run outside because it’s in the high 80s and I’m not acclimated to it. The next day I’m pulling out my Toasty Cheeks Tights again. I think I’ve worn my gloves on runs more in April than I did in February.

And to add insult to injury, I’m still suffering from spring time allergies. Seriously? I can’t even wear short sleeves to run and I’m keeping the makers of Allegra in business?

Ah, well. I’m making the most of it. It’s still nice to only wear long sleeves instead of multiple layers. And we did have absolutely perfect weather at a local 5k on Saturday morning – where I volunteered instead of running.

Right now, this coming weekend looks absolutely perfect for a race, so I’ll be heading to my 73rd half marathon – the Petersburg Half Marathon.

After that? I’m heading to NASCAR. That’s right, I’ve been invited to the Toyota Owner’s 400 at the Richmond Raceway. Shoo is crazy excited as he’s been a NASCAR fan since he was little.

Then I’m pretty sure next week is summer…

    I. AM. SO. TIRED. OF. WINTER. I know its spring but here in Minnesota its crazy! This weekend we had about 6″ of snow and more on the forecast for Wednesday. It’s so annoying. Probably one of the reasons why I’m having such a hard time running. I just can’t. Bring on the summer!

Yeah, my parents are in Wisconsin and the pictures they sent today were just depressing. Hope it warms up soon!

Totally agree with your thoughts about the weather this month. So far I haven’t really noticed my allergies but the past couple of days I’ve been sneezing a little. I’ve probably avoided them because I haven’t been outside nearly as much as I usually am this time of year.

Not only are we not having spring, we’re still wearing all the layers, worrying about ice for races, and getting excited when it reaches 50.

But I would not be happy with your summer temps . . . assuming we get some. We’ve had years when it remains in the 50s til almost June!

We had one day so far this year when I could wear just one layer….pretty sure there will be no spring here. It’s been snowing for 3 days straight now. Have a blast at NASCAR!

This spring has been hard for me. While I don’t miss the hail storms in Texas, at least when it started warming up, we got spring weather. Snow up north meant rain for us. Here, April is the blizzard month, and I’m not used to that.

I completely agree with you. Soooo ready for some nice warm spring sunshine. I live in PA, and was in Richmond last weekend for Ukrop’s 10k. The weather was beautiful! Just what I needed. Good luck at your half this weekend. Hope the weather cooperates!

I’m in Michigan and it’s like December all over again. Ice storm over the weekend and now it’s been snowing for days. It’s crazy town. But, after tomorrow, things start looking up and I can’t wait! 60’s and 70’s next week- yes, please!!

Spring allergies are the worst! I still haven’t found anything that helps me with them. Thankfully all the cold and snow we’re still having has kept the allergies at bay for a now 😉

We’ve been having those same weather swings down here …Mother Nature is definitely menopausal. Yesterday it was cool and I was wearing capris and long sleeve …today I ran in shorts and tank and was suffering from lack of heat acclimation. It’s just downright crazy.

I’ve never been to a Nascar race although I’ve heard it’s super fun …a culture all of its own! Have fun!

I am really OVER winter as well! I have a trail marathon in two weeks and I just know it’s going to be snow, mud, or too hot.

Talk about crazy weather! I don’t know how you all are dealing some days. We have it a bit weird down here in FL, but NOTHING like you guys. When we are still getting the 50s/60s, it’s bliss down here this time of year.
Have a great race this weekend! And, enjoy NASCAR! 🙂

Coffee with a side of rain

Coffee with a side of rain

Apparently I only write coffee posts when I’m in Michigan. I guess my body is hard wired to wake up early, but the college kid has no interest in an early wakeup call. I’d run, but it’s raining and I did not bring the right running clothes, so here I sit. I’m joining Deb and […]
