This week has been, well, a week. My older son turned 16 – on the same day he had to take the PSATs. Poor kid. I’ve barely been running. I’ve just lost all motivation plus suddenly all the things that I ignored this summer are suddenly needing to be done. So today’s topic of “Things that make you go hmmm…” seems perfect for where I am mentally right now.
Swedish Death Cleaning – I came upon an article about this on Facebook. I’m not sure if it’s legit, but I love the idea. The theory is that as you age, you start going through your things and start getting rid of stuff so that you don’t leave your family with a ton of crap to dispose of. I have to admit that this resonates with me a lot more than the KonMari method. We’ve lived in this house for more than 20 years. It’s full. Completely full. There is no reason for me to have suits from when I last worked in an office – 13 years ago! And how many cute t-shirts from their baby days do my boys need??? Thankfully, I belong to a Buy Nothing group, so I can Swedish Death Clean my house to my heart’s content.
Math – When I was in high school, I loved math. I actually tutored algebra students during my last two years of high school. I already got one kid through Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Trig. Now it looks like I’ll be helping the second kid through math. But what gets me is all these newfangled methods they have to learn. They are required to learn them, but half the time when I teach them “the old-fashioned way”, my kids suddenly understand a concept that they were struggling with. This is going to be a long year…
Half Marathon #71 – Apparently I’ve used up all of my will power on (not buying) skirts and (not eating) junk food. So, when I heard I could run Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon if I donated $$ to a charity, I jumped on it. It’s 3 weeks after Marine Corps Marathon. I’m either brilliant… or not.
The weather – One day this week it felt like summer. Yesterday it felt like fall. Three days from now summer is supposed to come back. WTF? I need fall and I need it now. Yes, I am starting to obsess about the weather at Marine Corps Marathon.
This cat – Whenever she wants treats, she flops in the kitchen and offers up her belly. Yeah, no, I won’t be touching that. Yep, her belly is a trap – you touch it at your own risk.
I’m joining Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five 2.0 linkup!
Oh the clutter. We have so much crap, it’s overwhelming. I know I need to purge, but where to start?
Your cat…is a dog!
I just take it one area of the house at a time LOL.
I never understood why they had to change the way they taught kids math. I stopped understanding my son’s math years ago. He’s on his own! Hoping for fall over here too
My older son just started pre-calc, so that would be challenging for me to figure out since it’s been so long. My other one is doing math I already had to figure out for the other kid LOL.
That Swedish Death Cleaning definitely resonates with me. Because I spent much of the year cleaning out my parents’ house that they lived in for about 50 years. And they’re still alive!
So we’ll STILL have to go through their much smaller apartment at some date, but it won’t be as big a job, obviously. I, of course, still do have a lot of crap of my own. And I really enjoy clothes and shopping . . .
I’m trying to do a one in, one out thing. I have plenty of everything, so if I buy new, I need to get rid of old. Sometimes that even works…
Aw your cat is a sweetie! My cats looooove their bellies rubbed. I teach music at an elem school so while I have heard the new common core math is really frustrating, I never had to teach it myself. I saw that cleaning article on FB too and I think I need to make sure I do that when I get older. My husband and I don’t have children, so I imagine it will be our nieces and nephews (hopefully!) who end up with all our stuff when we are gone. Hopefully we won’t have much at that point!
She loves a belly rub, until she doesn’t. And you never know when she’s going to decide she’s done with the belly rub and bite you.
I get ya on the possession thing! I often think about what I would do if I had to pack up and move. There would be a ton of stuff I would get rid of (but there’s always the things I hang on to for “just in case” or “what if”…). Lol
Yes, so much crap in this house LOL.
My mom and her siblings cleaned out my grandparents’ house before my grandfather sold it, and had to throw out so much clutter. My grandmother saved everything, even gift boxes. My mom was finding clothes my grandmother hadn’t worn in years.
My cat waits patiently by the kitchen island when she wants treats. if I ignore her, she jumps on to the kitchen island. And her belly is a trap, but I like to rile her up.
I keep telling my parents to just get rid of things and not hold it for me. I’m trying to set an example for my kids (they like to hoard stuff LOL).
Our weather has been really messed up lately. I’m crossing my fingers the thunderstorms show me some mercy tomorrow for approximately 45 measly minutes so I can run my 5-miler without getting struck by lightning or washed down a river….
Aww, c’mon. Where’s your sense of adventure? 😉
Ha… my cat does that too – that belly is a trap!
Swedish Death Cleaning. Hilarious! Our basement flood forced my hand on lots of stuff we don’t need. I’ve got some business suits down there still. From 1999. Heaven help me.
This weather has been crazy! With the rain and cooler weather this week I kind of missed summer…but I have not enjoyed running in the heat and humidity lately! What about nice, sunny, but cooler fall weather?
But her belly is so cute and fluffy!!!!! Mew!
I need to Swedish Death Clean the heck out of my house, too. I hate all the junk that’s accumulating. It’s ridiculous.
8 days ’til MCM!
I need fall weather to stick around too. It’s been nice in Hong Kong the last couple of days, but I think it’s because a typhoon is out there somewhere. I had a cat with a belly like that!
So glad you signed up for WWH too! Hopefully I’ll be able to find you!
