Wearing a specific piece of jewelry. Eating the same breakfast every time. Wearing a specific hat or socks or color. Warming up a specific distance before each race.
Since today is St. Patrick’s day, the topic of Tuesdays on the Run with April and Patty is “Good Luck Charms and Rituals.” Got one? Share below or on your own blog post and link up below. As per usual, feel free to share any running related post and if you @ me in a tweet, I’ll be sure to retweet you. HEADS UP: next week’s topic is favorite spectator signs! I wanna hear the best you’ve seen, some awesome ones you’ve made, what you’d like to see on a sign, etc. Pictures = even better! The week after that, we want to hear about your dream race: maybe you’ve run one that you consider dream worthy, perhaps you have a specific location you’d like to race, or a certain way you’d have a race organized. Tell us your dreams!
Now, back to the topic at hand… I got nothin’. Unless wasting too much time on Facebook on race mornings is a lucky ritual, I don’t really have a ritual and I never wear/don’t have a lucky charm. Yeah, I know. I’m boring.
I mean, I do have things I tend to do the same for every race: I have a specific brand/style of underwear that I wear, but that’s because they are the only ones I’ve NEVER chafed with. I also eat approximately the same thing – almond butter and jelly sandwich, but that’s because I’ve never had bathroom issues, ahem, with that particular choice. I also get up at least an hour before I need to leave my house so that I have time to wake up, but again, that’s more just knowing what works for my body than thinking it will make me “lucky.” I also drink a beer the night before most races, but really, that’s just ’cause I like beer LOL.
What about you? Do you have a lucky charm or ritual? Do you have plans for St. Patrick’s Day? I plan to run for 2 hours. Yeah, I know how to party.

I guess my only lucky charm is wearing the same shoes and no new outfits. I’m not very superstitious!
I am a bit boring too, unless you count making sure I get through the porta potties at least twice whether I need it or not.
Oh, I’ve got a lucky charm…prior to the Chicago marathon last fall, my coach gave me a rock with the word believe painted on it. I’ve carried it with me to every race since–ok, it’s only been 3 total–and they’ve all been PRs. Who wants to mess with that?
I love your post, nothing wrong with being “boring” lol. I do not have any good luck charms either, and my ritual is pretty standard with most runners, but it’s what my body knows and needs before such a run. The highlight of my St. Patty’s day so far has been a 3 mile run before work, lol.
I love the wasting time on Facebook habit. I’m definitely guilty of that as well.
Oh, I just got why today’s topic was “lucky charms”! Very clever! Not a ritual, but I like to get on IG race morning and check out everyone’s race day outfit.
I always eat peanut butter and jelly on race morning but other than that I have nothing!
I’m a night before ice cream eater. When I have a sundae, it seems to help my performance.
Or that’s what I keep telling myself. 😉
I’m so terribly guilty of wasting time on FB as well. Along with instagram, but I believe instagram is way more beneficial for me than FB. Haha.
I’m the same way in that there are things I do the same for any race day, but more for practicality than because of any ritual. 🙂 I wouldn’t want to do anything in the morning without my coffee!
Like you, I’ve got nothing. There are certain clothes I like to wear and things I like to eat…but other than that…nothing.
I don’t have any lucky charms, but I definitely have a routine that I feel “off” if I don’t follow on race day!
I’m pretty flexible because I travel so much for races, but I do try to eat the same thing every morning before a race.
Man now I want to eat lucky charms cereal for dinner! 🙂 No lucky rituals here either, but I think I need to find one!
Ha! I’ve wanted Lucky Charms since I wrote this and I don’t even like Lucky Charms.
No lucky charms or rituals for me either. I do like to lay out my clothes and gear the night before though. And I will only eat an english muffin with almond butter before a long run or race.
I try to be organized about clothes the night before, but I don’t always manage it…
I wear personalized shoe charms!! Love it! You can find some of them here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MyDreamBigShop
