TOTR: Will run for beer

March 3, 2015 by MCM Mama 27 Comments

Yes, there is a reason my blog has that in its tagline: it’s one of my favorite post race treats. And that’s today’s topic for Tuesdays on the Run with my buddies Patty and April:

What is your favorite post race treat?

homebrew-beer

Of course, I’m not going to drink just any beer. I prefer my beers dark and sweet. Unfortunately, that comes with a high alcohol content a lot of the time, so I usually try to eat some food before I drink a beer. Usually, not always. (Running a race sponsored by a craft brewery = excellent way to get that beer at the end.)

Deschutes brewery

No beer available or all that’s there is Budmilloor swill? Give me chocolate milk or a Coke (and yes, brand matters there as well. Sorry, Pepsi.) And if I’m racing again the next day? We all know I’m heading to Subway for a ham and cheese sub with every.single.vegetable. and a Coke.

Subway sandwich and coke

Hmm, seeing that, I think I may need to treat myself to Subway after I run today. I ran 17 miles yesterday at a pretty decent pace with a fast final 3 miles. I can tell I’m a lot stronger runner than I was when I last trained for a marathon. Not faster, unfortunately, but stronger. I held a steady pace the whole time and could have definitely run at least one more mile, even with pushing it on my last mile. Today, I’m looking for double digits. A lot will depend on when the “weather” arrives and what it’s like. Seriously, more snow/sleet/wintry mix? Give it up, winter! It’s time for spring!

Do you crave a special treat after a race or long run? What do you like? And how’s your spring training going with the lovely winter this year?

Subway and a beer? Yum. I had a beer as big as me after the marathon on Saturday! Well that is after a few other things, but oh, it hit the spot!

I just had Subway yesterday. But I sure as hell did not run 17 miles. Whoops. It snowed all night here now it’s all getting iced over with freezing rain. Joy.

I actually crave coffee after a long run/race. I’m not too hungry immediately afterwards, but give me a bit and I will be 🙂 And I LOVE Subway.

I prefer coke over pepsi also and I love subway. Beer…no thanks lol I cannot stand the stuff. That’s why it’s never a draw for me when they give out free beer at races. I usually get it and let hubby have it.

The races I run usually serve Budweiser (not a fan), or if in FL maybe Landshark. Sometimes I’ll drink a cup but prefer sweet beer. I confess – I love lime-a-ritas in the summer. But only the lime ones! The rest of the “a-ritas” tastes like cough syrup. Coffee is my usual treat.

My favorite post-long run treat (when I was doing long runs) was a Panera cinnamon crunch bagel with walnut cream cheese. It made those long miles soo worth it!

I used to be a black beer and red beer fan, but these days, now that I avoid gluten wherever I can I RARELY have beer… fun to find races where you like the swag and the snacks!

My mom did the Leadville heavy half one year and bought a regular Coke after the race. Not diet, the full on regular Coke. she said nothing tasted so good.

COCA-COLA. My husband and I have had years where we swore against it, and years where we swore we couldn’t live without it…but it is always in our lives! 🙂 It’s like the perfect salty sweet!

I love a good burger after a race, not immediately after, like an hour or so, and of course a beer!! I also love coke during and after long races/runs!

Love this idea for a link up! Do you post the topic ahead of time? I’d love to join next week!

I’m all for a post-race beer! You’re right though, they’re usually Miller Ultra or whatever it is. Bleh. After the marathon in Phoenix this weekend, I enjoyed a nice, dark stout. Oh it hit the spot!

I always think beer at the end is awesome, until I actually finish a race, and then the last thing I want is beer lol. I wish I could drink it though! Post-race I don’t crave much of anything…usually my stomach is cramps and hurting :'( I usually end up treating myself the next day (or week lol) after though and splurging with a good burger and/or some sweets like ice cream!

So funny, we were JUST talking about post-race Coke the other day. I never drink the stuff on a day to day basis, but post race, I CRAVE a Coca Cola! So strange! And of course I love the post race beer too, but sometimes I feel so dehydrated or spent at the finish line that I need water and food first.

Coke is the nectar of the Gods – and I always feel a race entitles me to a real coke, too not just diet. I’m in agreement on the beer, too. Dark and sweet is the only way to go.
