Tuesdays on the Run: Amphipod handheld water bottle

October 27, 2014 by MCM Mama 27 Comments

It’s Tuesdays on the Run again!  Today we are talking about our favorite running products, so join Patty, April, and me by linking up a post about one of your favorites.

Tuesdays-on-the-run

I had a surprisingly hard time figuring out what to write for this.  If I find something I like, I tend to talk about it a lot here and once I find something I like, I tend to stick with it.  I’ve even been (mostly) loyal to my Altra Intuition running shoes lately!  I mean, I’ve talked about my Happy Girl skirts, my love for half zips, even what laundry detergent I’m using for my running clothes.  I was sure I had nothing new to say.

And then I realized I’d never written a review of the Amphipod handheld water bottle.  I was shocked to discover it because it is one of my most important pieces of running gear.  Seriously.  I ran 16 half marathons this year.  Guess how many I carried my water bottle in?  16.  Yep.

I have both the small bottle shown in the affiliate link above and the 20 ounce bottle.  I don’t carry the large bottle as often, but I did carry it for the entire 14.5 miles of the North Face Endurance Half.    I carry the smaller bottle on every run over 6 miles and at pretty much every half marathon I run.

Amphipod-Handheld-Review

See, I do carry it all.the.time. (Perhaps I should also review that jacket soon since I wear it to so many races LOL)

So, here’s what I love about it:

  • It fits on my hand in such a way that I don’t have to hold onto it.
  • The bottle has a curve to it that fits naturally in my small hand.
  • The design allows my hands to “breathe”.  I don’t think I’ve ever felt like my hand got too sweaty.
  • It had a zippered pouch that fits a key and a gu.

[Tweet “#TuesdaysontheRun Favorites: Amphipod handheld water bottle review”]

The only thing I don’t love about it is that it does not hold my smart phone (it did hold my flip phone LOL).  But, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen and landed on the bottle, so I can only imagine that if I had my phone there, that I would have broken it by now…  In fact, I’m on my 3rd bottle, in part because I fell on the first one so many times that I nearly destroyed it.  Yes, I am that klutzy.  I like it so much that I keep buying the same one when I lose one (which I have now done twice).  The current bottle I’ve had less than a year and it looks like new, but I haven’t fallen on it yet.

I have a very similar one to that, and I agree, I LOVE it! So easy to drink out of while running. Favorite new item, definitely the Saucony bullet shorts, they have two pockets for holding gels/water bottles, and are so comfortable. As for everything else, I honestly would recommend Enduropacks for recovery. It really makes a different to my training. If you use the coupon code tinamuir, you can get $10 off, and I can give you another code for a second month.

That’s an awesome invention! I like that it has a dual function in holding stuff too! (I apparently didn’t fully wake up this morning yet, so when I first saw, “It had a zippered pouch that fits a key and a gu,” I totally read that as ‘fits a key and a gun.’)

I think I need to go take a nap.

I have a similar one from Nathan which I really like for all the reason you listed – I do wish it held my phone too. BTW which jacket are you wearing? Looks like a good one!

I have one similar to this (Nathan brand) but mine LEAKS and drives me insane. Do you ever have problems with that? If not, I’m so buying this one!

This one leaks a bit sometimes. I just have to be really careful to put the lid on tightly.

I’ve used a Nathan Quick Draw for years but this looks lighter! May have to get the smaller one and try it out. And I love the price.

I have this same hand held bottle and love it! It’s so easy to use, the little pouch is perfect for my key, and it never bothers me during races.

At least the water bottle breaks your fall! Don’t worry though because I’m a klutz too. I’ve been looking for something like that for when I’m off the treadmill but I haven’t bought anything yet.

I have a smaller water bottle but the pocket is so small that I can’t even fit anything in it. So I end up taking my bigger one. This looks like it would be the perfect size.

I have a smaller one with the same issue. I can barely fit a key in the pocket.

Nice review! I had a handheld water bottle for a while but I just don’t like things on my arms or in my hands when I run. I do wish I had a sip of water most of the time when I’m running, so maybe I need to give it another try!

I thought I’d hate it, but I’m so used to it now that it feels weird to not use it.

I have to have water if i’m going over 8 miles. I like to run a loop through my town and it’s about 8.5, anything over that I take my water. I like this little hand held, looks like it’s lightweight and super comfortable to hold.

I love this bottle. I’ve tried a whole bunch and I always come back to this one. I actually feel weird running without it now.

I really don’t like using a hand held bottle, even with the strap so you don’t really have to hold it. I use a fuel belt although I know some people can’t stand that either.

I have a handheld, but I cannot use that on longer distances. And now that it is dark, I want to run hands free just in case as well.
I always carry water in my iFitness belt though. I won’t even run 3 miles in perfect weather without carrying water.
